1st Oil change

How many of you changed your oil for the first time around 1000 miles when you bought your new lancer? Or did you just wait to the normal interval of 3000 to do the first.

I waited for 7,500 like the manual said we could get away with, then switched to ~3K intervals when I saw how gross the oil got by then. Oops. Apparently the area I live in is dustier than I thought.

I changed mine at about 1500 and have been changing at 3000 ever since. My wife drives the car most of the time and I'd say 75% city / 25% hwy in the Chicago suburbs. Lots of short trips too. Even though it's full synthetic (Mobil 1), it's still pretty dirty after 3000 miles of use. It may be overkill, but oil is cheaper than parts....

I was concerned about all of the tiny metal shavings and what not that are almost certainly present in a new engine. Based on what I've read, 1500 seemed like enough time for most of the parts to wear in, but not so long that they should damage the engine.

i plan to do my first oil change at 1000 mile mark (car is new, so still awhile to go) and replace the 5W 30 with M1 0W 30 synthetic. thereafter, every 3000 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first. Oil wears out (in this case I actually mean 'thickens') with EITHER time or mileage, so don't just watch the miles. I do about half my miles in local driving, so with the higher proportion of cold starts to miles, the oil should be as low a viscosity as possible on cold start.

this article is probably the best I've read on the topic of motor oil -- i never realized that storing oil in an unheated garage causes it to thicken and become less effective over time ...

I changed at 800, then at 2500 and 5K thereafter.
