Evo MAF, k&n filter problems

I had an Evo viii MAF and a 4inch k&n filter sitting around waiting on the rest of my turbo kit, so I decided to throw them on and see if it would work. It does. Sorta.

The car is idling poorly and falling flat on its face when I step on it.

The idle seems to be getting a bit better.

I tried to swap back to my original MAF while keeping the k&n filter but the bolts are stuck on the adapter and if I have to do that I'm gonna have to grind them off.

What's going on here? I always thought the MAF just took the readings and the ecu adjusted accordingly. My ecu doesn't appear to be able to cope at this point.

I have the tactrix cable but so far I haven't even tried using it. If that becomes necessary I suppose now is as good a time as any to learn.

The evo maf reads a wider band of hertz than our stock one. It needs to be scaled in the ecu to function properly

Hmm. Thanks for the quick reply.

How difficult is this scaling?

I understand the stock lancer roms are fairly limited. Would now be a good time to flash to a Evo rom? (I hear people use the term "big maps" a lot but I've yet to figure out what that means, precisely.)

No idea, I've only been doing reading about ECUflash for that past few weeks but have no hands on experience. If you switch to evo roms then you'll have to adjust the scaling for your injectors. Larger maps mean that the tables (think Excel spreadsheets) for adjusting fuel and timing are larger in the evo rom.

Ok, thanks! :-)

Depending on how god awful the car is on my way too and from work tomorrow I'll probably just put the stock air box/MAF back on until I get a day off to mess with EcuFlash/evoscan/etc

I would not drive too much with an untuned evo maf. At the very least you should flash in the stock evo maf parameters into your lancer rom.

Didn't have time to mess with it much today, but didn't drive hardly any either. Tomorrow im going to try some different scalings and then probably revert to stock.

I found a phenomenal thread on the topic:
