Another NOS/4G94 question.

So I just recently installed a less than 30k motor into my 03 OZ Rally and I was curious about running spray to get a small amount more kick out of it. I do not want to boost, and will not be boosting this car as I have a turbo 1994 Honda Accord sitting right next to it in my garage as my autox/summer car making ~250whp on a stock block. Currently I'm building a 2.3l F23A1 motor for the Accord which will be making around ~500whp.

Anyways. I was reading up on spray and the 4G94 and the results weren't too good because the ECM couldn't keep up with the ignition retarding that is necessary for NOS. With the VTEC systems and PGMfi that the Honda's run the ECM can advance or retard the timing a TON even on a stock map. I was wondering if an aftermarket tuning solution would be able to tweak the timing enough to allow for a correct nitrous burst.

I ran a 75 shot with a ZEX Dry kit in my Accord before I went turbo and loved it. Keep in mind said motor has 230k on it and still runs like a champ. I'm not afraid of spray and I'm well aware of its workings. Just wondering if any sort of ECM would be able to alter the timing enough to allow for NOS. Stupid distributorless ignition.. All in all I would most likely be running a 35 shot with a 10lbs bottle and a dyno tune.

Why not just reflash the ecu with modded timing maps? Presumeably you won't spray below 3000rpm/WOT, so there wouldn't be any issue with running reduced timing up there while cruising. It'd always be a slug at WOT without the bottle, but no biggie.

That being said, I never ran any retarded timing on my previous bottle setup (VW engine though). 60 shot single fogger wet, and that engine lasted for years.

That's what I was wondering as well. The threads I read mentioned aftermarket tuning solutions like the Apexi SAFC for basic tuning. If I could just get a reflash (that being OBDII, where I am skilled in OBDI, specifically <crome>) and mess with the timing it would be perfect. Even if I needed to alter the physical timing an adjustable cam pulley is not too expensive, hell I have one on my Accord! I'll talk to my tuner and see what he thinks.

Reflashing the ECU is so cheap and easy, it's not worth it to go with the piggyback stuff.

How would I even go about reflashing it? All of my tuning resources are (you guessed it) Honda related. OBDII/USB cord, a basemap (unless it would be simple enough to change the timing myself), and some sort of reflashing PC tool I would imagine? My local tuner does an excellent job, but he's not one for conversation. At least not from what I've collected.

Well, you'd need a flashing cable, to start. The Tactrix OP2.0 is one option, another option is the Evoscan 1.3R/U cable. Evoscan is in Australia, so communication can be irritating, but shipping times are average.

I prefer my Tactrix OP2.0, but it's a bit more pricey than the Evoscan cables. IMO, it's still a bargain at $169, and one-day shipping . Way more straight forward to use as well.

ECUFlash is the software for editing/flashing the ecu, and it's freeware. It's made by Tactrix .
Evoscan makes datalogging software, and it's a $25 download.

It would be fairly easy to flash/edit it yourself if you had the cable. Everything is pretty straight forward .

I'll have to look into that! Definitely would love to squeeze some extra power out of my Lancer. Heck even fiddling around with basemaps will be nice. My Honda uses a literal chip that has to be burned after the tune so "fiddling" is a huge chore. Looks like I'll be keeping my eye out for NX Kits on craigs!
