Odd P0340 Issue (with fix)
Odd P0340 Issue (with fix)
I ran across an unusual problem/fix and thought I would share
The car, 2003 Lancer ES, would not fire up. I pulled a spark plug and confirmed that I had fuel but no spark. Using a scanner, I discovered that the check engine light was broken, and that a P0340 (cam sensor) code was present. I grabbed a couple of sensors from the junk yard but neither of those made any difference. Thinking that the timing belt might be broken, I pulled the plastic cam cover, but the belt was still intact. I checked for ground, 5v, and 12v at the cam sensor harness and all were present.
At this point I asked my wife to crank the car over while I was under the hood, and I noticed that the cam was not spinning. The pic below is what I found. For anyone else looking to change the timing belt on their car, it took me 4 hours in my garage without any special tools. The one exception was that I borrowed a professional strength impact gun to get the flywheel bolt out.
