Short Ram Intake vs Stock Air Box

Ok I hope I put this in the right category. My question is would having a short ram intake be better than using the stock air box? Does sucking in a larger volume of air but being hot better than sucking in cold air with the stock air box but being very restrictive.

hello about your question large amounts of air is ok but two things to look at from personal experience your question answers it cold air has more density compared to hot air as it has already expanded to the engine temp I THINK

When I first purchased my lancer, it had a short ram intake on it like that. In my opinion, it lost power and only sucked in hot air. The filter was actually suffering from heat damage from the header. I then purchased a cold air intake off eBay that mounted in the bumper. I gained around 4-5 mpg from the short ram. Can't compare stock air cleaner because I never had one. If you're set on a SR, get one that is positioned furthest away from the manifold, and comes with a heat shield.

Thinking of that at 6 in the morning it might not be too much air it might be the mass air flow being in the turbulant air from the pod filter and also the mixed temp difference between the headers and cold air well what im asking is has anyone put it at the throttle body instead of the filter my car is soooo modified i cant even tell if my mpg went down to 10 mpg oh wide open throttle dont help mpg does it

Haha, no It doesn't. But to be quite honest, I'm running 15 psi and I'm in if more than I'm not. I'm still getting around 23-25mpg. That's better than I get in my evo driving conservative lol

The stock air box is better. The problem is the heat. Only thing you'll really get out of a short ram is the sound. I ran a generic adapter/filter combo (02 OZ). The filter actually fell apart from the heat (again... generic filter). If you do decide to run a short ram, make sure it's a quality brand.

Im speaking from personal experience. I have a custom short ram on my car and it doesn't loose any power from the hot air. There are many ways to keep outside air coming into the filter to not suck in as much heat. If you are concerned about the heat that is being sucked in with a short ram then just buy a cai and route it down by your fog light. Only problem with a cai tho is that you have to avoid puddles so that you don't drown the intake xD Hope this helps

If you want to keep the air box, take some wire cutters and remove the rivets that hold the funnel piece inside the box where the air comes in. Then get a snorkel from a 4G69 air box and trim the part where it mounts to the radiator support to fit. This snorkel is the same diameter straight through instead of tapering like the stock 4G94 snorkel does. Do a search on the '04 RA Lancer engine bay and you'll see what I mean.
