Unhappy Camshft Position Sensor

I drive a 2002 Lancer OZ, bought it at 36,000 miles, it now has 40,665 or thereabouts.

I have encountered my first Service Engine Soon light so I took it back to the dealer, the day I took it in the light went off.

They said it was a glitch but they kept it for a whole afternoon.

Picked it up at 5:30 Yesterday and before I got home the light came on.

Took it back to the dealer today, waited an hour before they told me they needed to keep it all afternoon to run diagnostics.

I just got a call from the dealer saying that a Camshaft Position sensor is going out and that's why the Service Engine light is going on, off and back on.

$150 is what he quoted me, does that sound resonable?

Anyone else had this happen?

Thanks,

Under warranty....No

I believe the $150 does include install, it had better since I'll be tossing all my living/fun money from this paycheck at it.

I was hoping it wouldn't be this soon that stuff would start going bad on my Lancer, 40,000 miles isn't that much is it?

Camshaft position sesonor?... Seems rediculously complicated, and quite unusual....

And its not covered by warrenty?... I thought powertrain included everything that makes the car move... Like the camshaft... I dunno anymore...

because bumper to bumper goes to 36K, powertrain goes to 60K, which includes engine.

camshaft position sensor

The manager said he thought it might be covered, but then I guess he discovered either I wasn't the original owner or that the powertrain warranty doesn't cover the cps.

quote: "if you want to buy one ill sell you the acualy sensor and ill give you pictures about how to put it in its easier then changing a sprak plug" end quote:

The manager told me $150, however ((liquidlancer)) if it's as easy to install as you say, then they are making close to $100 of me on labor.

I'd be better off saving $$ by doing it myself, I'm generally ok when it comes to car mechanics however I've never had a newer car like my lancer. Gotta learn sometime though.

Hey liquid, could you go ahead and show me how replacing this part is done and I'll decide if I should try it, if you need my email just reply back. $52 doesn't sound that bad for the part anyhow.

Thanks,

Unhappy Cps

Ok, it's been awhile and I really, really need to get this fixed. On good days it only takes 10 minutes for my car to actually start, on bad days I'm sittting there for half an hour consistantly turning the ignition over, then letting it sit, then turning it over and letting it sit.

Hey LiquidLancer! I really would like to get that part from you, and a detailed explanation on how to install the new cps.

Or does anyone know where I can order the part??

Thanks,

You can get a new cam position sensor from the dealer, if push comes to shove. In my 4G93, I have changed it out twice (once when I did not know what I was doing and had a mechanic rape me, and the other time, was easy)... I got the part from the dealer and it cost me about 50 bucks and 10 minutes of my time.

CPS from dealer

Thanks AirQuez....more ?'s though,

Do I just call up the dealer and order the part from the Service Dept? Will they even sell it to me?

Could you give me a detailed description of the process of taking out the old and putting in the new sensor?

Thanks, I appreciate it greatly

I've started having the same problem - sporadic check engine light, code reads as P0340, camshaft position sensor malfunction. Very similar mileage as Gemini Lancer - 43,000.
Two questions:
Is driving with this problem until I can get it fixed likely to cause any further damage?

What exactly is involved in replacing the part?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The sensor is just a little piece of plastic with a magnet in it. It's about the size of a thumb, black, and sits by the driver's side end of the cam shaft. Unless the other part (which isn't actually the sensor and I can't remember the name of) is broken, in which case it'd be a 20 minute fix instead of a 5 minute fix.
