Question Radiator Fluid

Hey just want to get some of your guys views on radiator fluid type. Our US Lancers come with a Green coolent just like most cars i know. But my buddy's SRT-4 comes with Orange fluid in it. The dealership siad its for cars that run hotter and the "Orange Type" is suposed to cool better than the "Green Type." Is this a true fact? And if so would it hurt to change from Green to Orange?

Well dude, your just in luck cuz I know a thing or two when it comes to coolants. The Lancer uses a OAT(Organic Acid Technology) type of coolant as with most Japanese cars, do not and I repeat do not use the yellow bottle Prestone crap you find around everywhere because they contain silicates(little mircoscopic quart particles that act like scrubbers when the fluid boils) and will cause cavitational erosion and destroy your aluminium rad and premature wear on your waterpump within a year. If you want to keep it green, go to a Honda dealer and ask for a jug(2yr type coolant concetrate requires 50/50 water mix) since they are about $10 cheaper than what Mitsubishi charges for a jug. If wanna change it to orange, go to a Toyota dealer and ask for jug, the orange Toyota are 5 years extended service coolants and has very nice smell and color. Your dealership sure doesn't know what the heck its talking about, coolant strength is measures by the ratio of water you add to the base coolant and most mechanics today don't know squat about coolant thats out there since theres like 4 types of coolant technologies on the market now and they will mix the wrong types for a top up, there is no international standards on color of coolant.

Types of coolants that you will find around:

1. EG silicate based like yellow bottle Prestones
2. EG OAT based as found at most Japanese dealers
3. PG(Polyprolene Glycol) based like Prestone Low Tox, you need to completely drain your system first of the old EG based coolants.
4. DexCool for GM cars such as Havoline and others, causes sludging of waterpumps, not recommeded
