Exhaust leak
Backfiring is actually caused by opening up the header and the exhaust combined. When I had my Civic I put on a full DC sports exhaust, and there wasn't enough back pressure so I was backfiring all the time. Putting on an Apexi World Sport exhaust helped solve that problem. Hope you get the leak patched up so you'll be running 100% again.

There's people that have done things like chop off exhausts from cars because they "heard" it would provide gains since it removes restriction. Companies have turned around and dyno charted this method and guess what? Doing that lost hp and tq all across the powerband instead of providing any gains.
So I'll ask again, how much do you know to validate your original statement?

Everything is good now. I got a new gasket put on with the catback. I was just wondering if things were different better or worse when I had the stock piping on but a leak.
