Not to start a Subaru vs. DSM war, but...
I've been trying the last few weeks to find any dealer in the NW US that would agree to sell the EVO for MSRP. To a dealer, they all say there will be a markup, and are not interested in MSRP. I suppose that makes perfect business sense for them, but I refuse to pay over MSRP for any car as a personal principle. I feel they're getting enough at MSRP, plus I naively have this idea that they should be glad to have someone so interested in the car, and should try to earn my business.
My experience with the local Subaru dealership could not be more different. The internet guy there has assured me I will be able to get the STi for MSRP or less, and actually knows what a STi is, and seems interested in my business.
I'd love to have the EVO, and I know it's more of the drivers car, is faster in a straight line, and can outhandle the STi. But I'm still likely going to end up with the Subaru because of the price and the coolness of the dealership. It just strikes me that ALL the Mistsu dealerships have been a-holes about the EVO. Yes, probably most Subaru dealerships will be a-holes about the STi, but at least I found one that isn't.
Not a swipe at any of you guys or Mitsubishi (obviously not, because I'm interested in the EVO), just my personal experiences with the dealerships. Arghh!

Don't let a few crappy dealers ruin your thoughts of the Evo. If you personally feel it's better than the Sti, then when it gets here you'll regret owning the Sti. There's still plenty of time so just keep looking around and see if you'll find a dealer that suits your needs.

Don't do it! You cannot add dealer goodwill to a car and make it perform better
And don't get hung up over MSRP. In the world of supply and demand, the market fixes the price. Maybe that is why the Scooby dealers cannot get more than MSRP.
Claudius is so right, the 7 is a much better car in every aspect. Imagine how you will feel when all the mags run back to back tests, like they have done in Europe, and conclude what we know, the 7 is far better. Will you be happy driving the second best.

I was pushed to the EVO for the same reason. The local Subaru dealer wants $1000 now to hold an STi. They then want $5000 over MSRP when they come in. I would pay a small amount over but not 5k. So I'm looking forward to An EVO VII. Both cars are great, right now the EVOs are better.

It is just like when the Subaru dealer first got their hands on WRX. No one, I mean no one can even test drive it. You either buy it on the spot, or leave.
I want to get the Evo 7 also, but it seems that majority of the Mitsu dealer in my area will most likely to sell it above MSRP.
How to get over this ?
You wait .... You wait until the cars start pilling up in the dealers lot and it wont be long. With the cars start pilling up, they will have to let go their arrogant and let you test drive it and maybe even give you a good deal. Remember, dealer need to sell new cars as fast as they can, because they got but load of commisions for it. The longer those cars sits there at the lot, the less they got.
Like today, I went to the Subaru dealer and found no problem at all to get a test drive. There are like 5-8 WRX stuck at the dealer fully loaded. Most of the cars have stayed there for weeks.
I'm pretty sure you all got the idea.

Dealers get from 3 to 5 percent of a car's worth from the car company (Mitsu, Subaru, Ford, etc.). This money is earmarked for maintanence while the car is on the lot. So when a dealer sells at invoice, they still make money. When they sell over MSRP, they make a buttload of cashola.
Selling over MSRP is disgusting and I will never buy a car from a dealership that even asks for over MSRP.
I got my Si for about $500 over invoice, but they made more like $1000. Sure, the salesmen were jerks, as usual, but they gave me a good deal on a popular car.
The Subaru dealership in the same town never charged over MSRP for WRX's when they came out either. I don't think dealerships can get away with that type of thing in a smaller town (40,000). Maybe you guys should try the small-town approach...

All these people here who say they would never pay over so or so much, I totally understand what you're saying.
But, drive an Evo, and I promise you would pay 1,000 USD more and be happy you could get hold of one of those.
And hey, what's the car that is almost as good as an Evo? Like the closest thing? ... Right, and how much is THAT??
You can replace the ... with either Modena, Maranello, or Porsche Turbo.

yeah, kinda what carves said.
i got my wrx for msrp(sad to say). now there's dealerships with a plethora of wrxes just waiting to be unloaded/waiting to be negotiated. my experience here has taught me to wait.

Can't just use other people's opinion to make a $30k money loosing investment. Got to drive to believe first.
Would you say that because Tommi Meiken now races with the STi, that must mean STi is a better car than the EVO?
... I don't believe that... but that is what Subaru is hoping to have people believe by dishing out the cash to Tommi Meiken.
By the way, anyone planning to go to the LA Car
Show in January? I am thinking about doing that as a short vacation, anyone?
Does anyone here read RallyXS Magazine? It's interesting to note that in the Oct/Nov 2001 issue, pg 45 in a poll given to WRC drivers NONE of them wanted to drive the LanEvo. Next question was to pick the three best WRC cars... it went like this:
- Peugeot 206 WRC 34points
- Subaru Impreza WRC 30points
- Citroen Xsara WRC 29points
- Ford Focus RS WRC 24points
- Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 3points
- Hyundai Accent WRC2 3points
- Skoda Octavia WRC 0points
Don't get confused between a WRC rally car and a road car. They are completely different so it is not possible to take a rating of the rally cars and apply it to road car.
Go try a Peugeot 206 if you don't believe me
