I'm looking to get a set of Ice/Snow tires for my 2002 OZ but having trouble finding a good set. I live up in the Pittsburgh area and the roads in the winter are horrible. The tires would be going on my stock OZ rims because in the Spring I'll be getting a new set of Rims anyway. Any suggestions as to the best Ice/Snow tires would be helpful. I'm looking to buy within the next week or so.

It snowed the first day here in Toronto and the roads sucked. I just installed some Toyo Observe Garrett HT's on the car. So far so good, good traction and breaking on the ice and snow.

 

Heres my take on "winter" tires:


Ice/Snow tires: get tires with the most sipes if you drive on mostly icey roads and tires with agressive threads if you drive in deeper snow. Basically the Blizzacks are best for deeper snow and the Artic Alpins for great for ice, so its always a trade off between the two. I have tried the Toyo Observe GO2 and I was not impress with their performance. Dunlop Graspics is an affordable option, but it gives mushy steering due to the soft rubber and large amounts of sipes.

If you are on a budget, I suggest you goto to Walmart and get their WinterMark tire which are made by Kelly tires that have a good snow thread and add some studs for for ice.

 

Nokian Winter Tires, hands down the best on the market if you have the money. Blizzaks are overrated. People buy them because of marketing, and they think they are the best thing to ever because they've never used other winter tires. I've got experience with five different winter tires (Bridgestone Blizzak, Nokain Hakkapeliitta, Firestone Winterfire, Arctic Alpins, and Dunlop Wintersport M2/M3). The Nokians are best, Dunlops second, the Blizzaks and Alpins are about the same, and the Firestone's are last (but still above Walmart style).

i did a search, but all i came up with were winter tires for the evo, and since i don't have an evo. i made a lancer thread.

 

You're right, I stand corrected. There haven't been more than two posts about winter tires this season, I'm remembering all the ones I had to answer last season. The EVO searches will still yield valuable information about the tires since tire performance will be the same for EVO and Lancer. The only difference is there aren't as many options for the EVO because of the larger rims, although more companies are offering winter tires in larger diameters these days. Right now my Lancer is garaged. Want to buy my two steelies with winters on them (Firestone Winterfires)?

 

I'm tempted. But four of them would be nicer...
