Blacked out grill

Well I really need something to do since I am off work for a bit. I went and priced a few parts to do the blacked out grill mod from the early early days of the board.

Wasn't there a how to on this? I can't find anything on it.

All I really want to know is what grade of sand paper people used to get off the silver around the grill?

Thanks

I searched the general, show and shine and how to forums from the beginning but couldn't find anything.

I remember someone using a primer after sanding and the grill came out better. If I am going to do this I want it to look good. I need a project for tomorrow to get me through the day so that's what I'll do.

yea, if you really want it to look nice n smooth, i would use some 220 to take off the silver, prime, and wet sand it w/ at least 400.. post a pic up if you do it, ive never seen it, and im really gettin tired of this grill

Well I went to Home depot tonight.

I bought some Paint primer, Black high performance enamel, and some clear gloss. Then I picked up some rough 60 grit sand paper to remove the silver on the grill. Once that is removed I have some 150 grit finer sand paper to smooth it out.

I bought a sanding block to do it by hand but my girlfriend says that may take too long.

We'll see as I have nothing else to do anyway. My only concern is that I may not have enough black paint with only one can but hopefully the primer will help it adhere to the grill better.

It could be a 2 day project but I'll post up once it is completed.

I forgot to say it cost me $25.50 for the parts. I bought the best materials to hopefully get a better result.

Have you ever seen the Jaguar S type... can't remember the exact model but it comes with an all BLACK grill. Compared to the regular version makes the car look much more sporty.

Even the Lancer's in the registry with blacked out grills look better to me than stock.

i used 600grit to prep the surface, and 1200 to wet sand it smooth, total costs for paper $8, primer $3, paint $3, and clear $3 = ~$17

Total time = roughly 6 hrs total from uninstall to install

Probably because the paint will chip right off of that smooth surface in a matter of days. Do yourself a favor and don't ever repaint your car by yourself.

How much time did you take to dry the paint? How long did it take to get the silver off?

I'll find out tomorrow but wondering.
