+1. Piggy, Pulley, and Intake. If not the piggy, then just hte intake. THere are a few people selling the older piggyback on here for circa 200-300 dollars, which would do a huge difference on the car.

Just out of interest why would your g/f not want exhausts or headers? Powergains aside, most aftermarket headers look nice and there are some pretty quite exhausts around. And it's going to be a heck of a lot easier to install exhaust/header compared to a crank pulley. Perhaps she want it to look stock, but then adding an intake is not exactly the most sleeper way of doing it. I'm a little confused...

^Future problems. Girls usually don't want to figure out a way to pass emission testing or problems with cops because of exhaust (small gains). Piggyback is great because it's self learning, easy to install, easy to take out, and gives a lot of gains.
That's how I think about it.

woooah, does changing you exhaust really fail your emission test? That's strange. I wouldn't think that if you don't remove the cat and get a pretty quiet system then you should be fine.... the exhaust doesn't take out any 'pollution' except for the cat.
each to his own, I guess...

In the short run (next 6 months) $200 or so, which seems to be intake and exhaust. I am going to be buying this stuff for her and am more worried about my car than hers. I still need a borla hush, short ram intake, upgrade my EM and some pulleys so that I will be stage 3ish, and that is about $1500 in stuff to get. Once I get all that I can think of getting her a piggyback unit, or just give her my old one (The one I have works on lancers but is still made for Subaru's).

As for exhaust, she does not want it to be any louder at all and wants it to retain its stock look. Yes I know an intake will increase the noise, but that she does not mind, she knows what both an intake and exhaust sounds like and likes one and not the other. And passing emissions is a thing she needs to worry about so no catless setup like mine.

All depends on local regulations. Just the exhaust will give you about 2whps and you will pass the emission with no problems. But switching to aftermarket header will get rid of the first cat and then you might have problems.

$200 won't get you much. And you said she doesn't want the exhaust to look or sound different, so don't bother with it. I'd say you should put the $200 in the bank and buy the piggyback when you get a chance.

No matter what, you're not going to make a rocket out of it.

I'm not sure how effective the piggyback will be with just an intake though (remember he said no header and no exhaust).

I know its not going to be a rocket. My car runs the 1/4 in the low 13s and runs 0-60 in under 5 seconds so going fast isn't what she is looking for. She just wants to shut up her friend who wont' stop telling my G/F that her car sucks because it is an auto. And just FYI my G/F pays for her car, her friend (if you want to call her that) had daddy buy her a car. Plus my g/F just wants a bit more oomph to go along with all the other things she has done. She doesn't want to do the spoiler, wheels, tires, stereo and not do anything to make it a hair faster.

Check Buschur racing for cheap air intakes.

They discontinued lancer products but had some over stock left. Call and ask if they have any short rams left

Also you can swap in a Mirage intake manifold for cheap if you port and do the work yourself. Check the Part out section for one on sale right now.

Last but not least if you buy the Greddy $79 muffler from RRM in the vendor section you can make her an axleback exhaust.

that's gonna be as close to $200 worth of performance you can get without going too radical.

If you want pics you can check out the nasioc forums. I am P-townWRX on there. Her friend argues about anything. She said she hated Pina coladas because she doesn't like tequila, I told her they use rum and she got mad and fought with me over them using tequila. She will fight about anything, I don't know why my G/F hangs out with her, i don't know why anybody does for that matter, but she can be fun, sometimes...

Thanks for the info WADADLIG, I will look into all that.
