the most discouraging thing in the world

so i was looking thru the forums and i hear that if an intake isnt properly tuned right, you can lose hp due to the different ways the intake is styled. well i consulted a friend about this and he tells me its somewhat true but you shouldn't worry about it b/c the lancer is, in his words, "you dont necessarily need to tune to see gains. i dont know man. your car isnt made to be fixed up. everything i've read and seen are things about how unresponsive ur car is, etc etc." now i dont know about you people, but how discouraging is that to us lancer owners? i mean i know it is seen as a "poor man's evo" but isnt that the worst way to squash someone's dreams. and please lemme know what you all think abt this. and it'd be nice if someone can tell me how to "properly tune" your car for say: a cai or sri, because im looking at getting one soon and want to get all i can out of an aftermarket intake, especially because the brand name ones, aren't cheap.

well, he's right, our cars aren't that great for tuning. You have to spend a good chunk of change to make it go fast. Where ours shines is being quick, great cornering even stock, switch to a coilover setup and it is so much better.

As for tuning an intake setup, idk about that, mine works just fine as it is.

umm... well most mods for car should be tuned after install. High performance are really the ones that need it. You can slap an intake on the lancer and the factory ecu will "learn" that its getting more air. It won't be an exact "flash" or "tune" but with the lancers its not really a big deal. Now if you talking FI or sumthing else "big" then i would more that urge you to do it.
Put it this way.
Evo... Intake, TBE , boost controller, a flash would be very helpful
Lancer... Intake, Full Exhaust (including headers), and intake manifold, its not needed.
Plus the fact that our ECU's won't allow a flash (from what i herd/been told), the only way to really tune would be standalone and the only ones who would really need it are the stage 2 or higher guys (sc/tc) the NA guys with everymod available and some custom stuff also. But for aftermarket bolt ons i'd say pass and just deal with the fact the Lancer isn't a performance car. Don't get me wrong i love my fake evo.

You will feel some difference with an intake. but save your money til you go turbo and super and use a standalone.

Man...don't listen to that bulls*** because those are people that just wanna bring you down...believe me...I was in your shoes when people was giving me some discouraging advice about my car, but so what if its not the best car to tune...its the love you have for the car...i could care less on how people view my car look wise and performance wise. Hey it runs good with a couple of bolt ons like an intake, cat back exhause, headers, lowering springs, front/rear sway bar, and etc. I love what I drive!

I have never seen it that way...however there are ALWAYS better cars out there. True, the EVO is a great performance machine right out of the box...but that doesn't mean a normal Lancer can't be. I happen to love the great handling of my car, and I get better at driving it faster through corners all the time. There are guys with the puney 4G94 engine that have turned it into a monster. It all takes money, and time. I see my car as a great future project, that will turn into a complete beast after I get another daily driver.

Like all of the guys have said, you get out of it what you put into it. Unlike some cars that respond with just an intake and an exhaust our car takes a bit more TLC to get gains. But in my opinion that's cool. I'd rather have a car that is uniquely modified than a car that was easy to tune and get results out of.

Exactly...don't worry about the bs, and just stick to what you do best cause I enjoy fixing my car and plus how many people out there own a lancer that's modded in different ways...not that many, but I see civics everyday. To me the lancer is a unique car that many people overlook and sometimes underestimate, and plus a good daily driver...I be gettin 30 mpg or if im lucky 35mpg...It's all good though!

I wouldn't discourage you that way but I will certainly would at least warn you that the basic Lancer 2.0 is perhaps one of the worst engines to mod. You will truly get minimal gains with mods.

It is a very delicate answer to tell any lancer owner that a lancer engine is really not designed to get big improvements with mods but I am just being honest however I do support your project. Anything can be done if you have the money, you make your car fast but that route would cost you more than any other average car.

I could tell you this one million times but people would still do whatever they want, even a Ralliart would be an intelligent buy, it cost a bit more but it is much more capable and not that much expensive in the long run.

In my opinion, I believe the 04-05 ralliart looks like a sedan lookwise, but it may perform better with that mivec, but so what, it all depends on what you are lookin for. There is potential within the lancer, and thats if you got money, but besides everything else I wouldn't call the 4g94 the worse engine to mod, dude look at it this way, what if you was in a shoes of a lancer owner, I know you wouldn't call your car wack....com'on man I know you own an evo and all, but you aint gotta go diss the lancer like that...

The 2.4L mivec is definately on my list of future mods. I've given up on upgrading my engine, not to say I am unhappy with my engine of course....but with the mivec, you get great power with the nice body style ('02-'03 of course!). The power I have now is good for the kind of corners I like to take on, but not everyone likes corners of course (dragsters), and that is where our cars suck...straight-line acceleration.
I'd rather save for a better platform to tune! A N/A fully built MIVEC! Music to my ears!

Rally Lancer,

At the end is what makes the people happy. If the shoe fits , wear it.. if the budget allows it and that is what your project is about then do it.

I am saying in other words that the lancer base model engine is not wel known to make significant power with mods.

The lancers were designed from factory to be economical cars on price and gas, no more no less, with that in mind expect the engine to produce power acordingly with it engineering designed( low power /great gas mileage).

I still think the Ralliart is a much better choice for modifications, the ratio of cost/power on the lancers 2.0 are indeed questionable but if money is not and issue and that is your project then go ahead.
