Red face Side skirts help...

Hello guys,

i just bought used 02 OZ side skirts(black) for my 04 ES. They are pretty scratched up so i took them to the local body shop and they gave me an estimate of $200.00 to repaint and put them on to my car.

My questions is....is that a good deal? If not, Can i fix the scratches at home and install them on my own?

Any ideas, comments and suggestions are welcome.

I dont mind painting them at home but i just dont know the whole process of painting such as sanding, putting primer and using spray gun to put the paint on.

If i knew, i would definately do it at home. If you guys have a link or something that tells how to do it, please post it here. Thanx

i didn't think the 02 SS fit on the 04. Tell us how they fit.

It sounds like an ok deal, but i think you could do better

Yes, i dont want to spend my money for paint and installation. I bought them for 45 bucks local pick up. I also just tried them on just to make sure that they fit and actually they do fit perfact on my 04 ES.

Now the question is getting them painted. I will take some better pics of them and put them on. May be you guys will be able to tell if they are too bad. If not, i will not get them painted just put them on at home.

Sorry about the pic quality....it was my cell phone.

I gotta say, they are worth every penny. They definately give car a better, lowered look. I really love them........

$200 is a fair price. Even if you did it yourself, you would need about $75 in paint and additives and a spray gun. If you plan on doing things like this i the future, you should go out and buy a gun (a touch-up gun can cost about $200) and learn how to do this. My dad ha a gun and we tried to touch up a bad scratch on my rear bumper. The clearcoat came out terribly because of a miscalculation in weather, but at least I still have enough paint to sand it down and try, try again.

You're going to have to sand the whole thing with some 120+ grit sand paper. Apply some finishing putty over those scratches, sand those down flush with the rest of the skirt. Then you will have to clean off the whole thing so there isn't any dust build up. Spray the primer, with a 30-50% overlap for even coverage. Depending on the kind of primer, you may have to wait a while for it to dry up. Do 2-3 coats depending on your preference. Spray a thin guide coat on the primer, not much, you just want to make it look like you "sprinkled" paint on it. You can do that with black spray paint. Sand all that down all nice and neat with some 400+ grit. Clean off the whole thing again, use grease and wax remover this time too. Then wipe over the whole thing with a tack cloth. Spray your paint the same way you did the primer, side to side with a 25-50% overlap. Let dry. You can just use a single stage paint since the skirts are so low on the car, that way no need to spend more on a multistage paint. Pretty easy when you know what you are doing.

I'd say just bring them to that shop if you don't plan on doing any other paint/body work. If you DO plan on doing other paint and body work, you can do it yourself and get a paint gun and air compressor now. Sorry this is kinda long and missing some info, just trying to give you a jist of what you would do to do it yourself and make it look decent.

Damn, good luck. I just paid $100 to have some hood vents painted. I stick with the professionals for bodywork...
