Keep the spring and metal sleeve in it for auto, or take the spring out for manual. A manual knob WILL NOT WORK. It will keep the shift button pressed down all the time and yes that means if your not smart you could shift it into reverse. but with the buttin pressed down, you cant take the keys out of the ignition, it locks them in. When i get pics of mine installed I'll post them.
haha well actually, a regular stick shift knob will work, does work. As long as you get the non-screw in type stick shift knob, which is what i have apparently, and use the correct spacer, the entire knob will be free to move up and down. and just in case you havnt taken the knob out to check, the rod that the button on the oem auto knob presses on already has a build in spring in it. If you take the auto knob off, you will see a thin metal rod with a white "condom" on top. The rod itself has a spring already build in at the very bottom where its not visible so the shift button will NOT stay pressed. and in order to shift, you press the entire stick shift knob down, which will be able to go back to its original position due to Hooke's law on restoring force of an ideal spring, where Fs=-kx. Of course if Fg of your knob is greater than Fs, then the knob will stay pressed forever.

lol ok, well, if you have a sleeve for the knob to slide on it will work. I meant if you just get the kind that tighten down. If you push the stem all the way down and tighten the knob, it will keep the stem pressed down because the knob is holding it down.

^ yup

i actually had another regular stick shift knob before with no spacer, and i went to the post office and jacked some "priority mail" post-it stickers and wrapped it around the rod to decrease the play. it worked fine, just that it left some glue mark on the rod after which i had to clean off with goo-gone

I put an after market shift knob on mine also. But it stands so tall up so i take my ziz wheel and cut an inch off the rod that the shifter sites on, but becare ful not to cut the inner piece that pushes down to let you shift out of gears. So now it looks like a short shifter for the automatic. Worked GREAT! Oh yeah and if you shift into reverse it won't do anything. It's a second neutral as long as your over 15 mph. (don't ask i found out lol).
