Use jack stands - here's why.

I say this because this weekend i got in a accident. Heres the story

My sister in law wanted us to fix her 02 mazda 3, but my brother in law tryed like a few weeks ago couldnt get it to the bolt off. well we tryed it again this saturday. We jacked the car up with the stock jack that came with the car. then we got the tire off. i got under the rotor. my right leg was stepping in the inside of the fender and i had both hads on the wrench trying my hardest to unscrew that bolt. the jack tipped over and my right arm and leg got caught under the rotor. lucky my brother in law and friend was there when it happened cause they grabbed under the fender and was trying with all their strenght to lift the car. they yelled out and my other bro in law ran out and helped. they all lifted the car enough for me to get out. the rotor but a hole almost to my bone. i was lucky that day. if my leg wasnt under my arm then the rotor would of snapped my wrist like a twig against the cement.

NEVER USE A STOCK JACK!!! ALWAYS A JACK STAND!

so you were wrenching on the car while the car was jacked up? if thats the case it is your fault not the jacks. the jack is for quick changing of tires only not to support the car while moving around and being wrenched, also you are supposed to loosen bolts while the car is on the ground even when changing the tire. the other case people were talking about the jack happened to break not his fault that was the jacks fault. of course you are supposed to use jack stands if you are working on the car. holding the car up to be worked on is not a jacks purpose.

I totally agree. Good to here you didn't get seriously injured, but people die from moves like that. ALWAYS use stands when wrenching on your ride!

Edit: And wear your safety glasses!

i definately agree. glad you're okay, but you made the wrong move. i don't see why anybody would use a jack as a jack stand.

Yeah... it's always a good idea to invest in a $30 floor jack and jack stands.

Sorry to hear about your accident, my advice for the future.

1. The stock jacks are ment for roadside tire changes only.
2. Never ever ever get under a car that is not properly supported by jack stands.

+1

The jack that "came with the car" is meant to be used with the spare tire that came with the car to change a tire. Check your owners manual, im sure it says that.

Changing thread title. At first I felt bad because I thought something happened to you. Then I see that you almost hurt yourself through your own negligence. I find it harder to empathize now...
