Thinking of turboing - is it really worth it?

hey,

im going back and forth about buying the RRM turbo kit for my '06 OZ, but im starting to wonder if it's really worth it in the end.

I used to have a couple 240'sx and i turboed the one ka24de engine,,,,it was fast!

Now i know on a stock engine point, you can only safely and reliably double your hp output.

My question is, the 200hp ill get in my lancer after i get the RRM kit, be worth the money? Is a turboed lancer (stock) really fast in the end? or just quicker than what it used to be?

Can it keep up with a 240'sx with a stock red top SR20det? Or a type R integra or something? Maybe even an RSX or a stock gold/jetta 1.8T?

what are your guys experiences and/or opinions?

oh and is it also worth tossing my warranty out the window and reliabilty if i turbo? (yes i know the RRM kit is reliable , with 4 years etc, etc, but what about after 200 000km+ on the engine? how will it hold then?!)

thanks

im debating to but i think im going to just get a 240sx in stead becasue if you look at it you can get a sr20 and it already has just as much hp as a turboed lancer and it has more potential! so instead of spending 4 grand on a turbo save up and buy a better car. thats what im doing but i still think if i had the money to just throw around i would turbo the lancer lol.

These threads are pointless, sorry but they are. No one can decide if something is worth it to you. You might as well ask if people think you'd like the color blue. Things to ask yourself (since I went through this a few months ago), can you afford a better car? How far do you want to mod your car? How much power is enough? What do you want out of your car?

I believe it it worth it. But like Ambystom01 said, only you can know if it is worth it. But i got my car turboed and all i can say is i love it. The car is quicker and faster, but all that really matter to me is that it is so much quicker than before. Oh by the way, i have an 05 with 18,000 miles.

well i was not looking for what people think i should do...i was mostly looking for people who have the RRM kit to reply with an answer to let me know how fast exactly is a turbo lancer. We dont have many lancer's around here that are "done up".

dyno sheets just show numbers. To me i can't determine how those numbers will make the car faster. Every car will be diff. because of power to weight ratios. Every car is different.

People who have the kit, or have ridden in one, how fast is your 0-60? or have you compared to some other cars out there?

I have the RRM non-ic kit. So i believe i know lil about their kit. The kit makes my car go fast, real fast. Like i said before, i do not regret my decision of voiding my warranty and boosting my lancer.

Thank you Amby.

If you plan on turboing, personally, don't go w/ a non-IC kit. It's not worth it if you know you're gonna plan on intercooling it anyways.

Mitsu Warranty sucks... no matter how you look at it.

if i do it, im doign it right the first time, im going to buy the IC kit.

and i was looking at someones video of a RRM kit and it took like 12 sec to get to 60! after i saw that, i didnt think it was possible but again its hard to say.

ill probably just do it anyways since its better to invest into a newer car than an old car with a ton of problems....

thanks

I thought about adding a turbo to my 06 RA but then I look around at the new cars and they keep making them with more hp so IMO if you want fast you should have bought fast. Although turbo is appealing.

so if dyno sheets just show numbers and members with the turbo kits are responding that they love their turbo (as I will also attest to), then what are you looking for?

this is very true
realistically everyone wants a fast car, but if you can't fit one into your budget that can make over 300whp, then stick with a turbo lancer... not a bad way to go

This is all the answer you need really. You decide obviously but I have never heard a guy say he regretted going turbo. Never.

If you want potential either spend the $$$ on an Evo or STI or go out and get a good used Honda and boost that. Im sorry to say but the Lancer doesnt have the potential to make big power numbers. However i have boosted my '02 OZ and can say that it is fun because of the gearing but it will not run with WRX's or SRT's. I can have fun with NA Integras and Civics but everything that was fast from the factory can still whup my butt.

Here is an example of what else you can do.

'93 DA Integra - $2000
Homegrown Turbo Kit w/ T3-T04B - $1350
Install - $600
Tune - $100 per Hour

223 HP at the wheels

BTW its for sale

I mean fast compared to stock lancer. It is a big difference.

AND there is nothing wrong with going non-ic. If it was so stupid, RRM would not stand behind their non-ic kit.

NON ic is not the best solution, i own one but i want to IC it asap.

the bottom line is the intake temps are high and I am not comfortable with it. i have an egt gauge and i monitor everthing with a wideband so i am not TOO worried, but on hooot days i tend not to boost. I have a dejon MBC and i turn it down to 1-2 psi. still nice just not too fast. im playing it safe especially since i have over 100K

I LOVE rrm's product and they do stand behind their product for the most part with great service, but the kit is NOT safe IMHPO and there have been several who blow their engine on the kit. (non ic)

it may be due to not checking connections or by using synthetic, but i am still NOT comfortable, and i am at 5psi. You seem novice and i hope you take care to at least get basic monitering (sp)equipment.

Im not saying it is the best, but people on here make it seem like it is not worth it. I love my non-ic kit. I would like to ic, but i still think the non-ic is a good buy.
