To get good paint that actually stays on the car under normal driving conditions, it is still hella expensive.

I was talking about doing all the work yourself and stuff. I had access to a paintbooth in high school for my auto collision class, all I had to pay for was paint, primer, activators, and reducers for both. Came out to $350 with my teacher's discount for a single stage paint. Granted it had that built in clear (which does suck), it came out extremely well, and the paint took a good amount of beating (construction signs, rocks - not small pebbles, rocks from taking a FWD Maxima out into the desert and being an idiot). Then again I didn't pay labor, or for masking and colorsand and polishing and things of that nature, I would imagine that would be the most expensive part.

Anyway, that's the point I was trying to get to, the paint is fairly cheap. You pay for the labor, and in the case of painting a car, there is a ton of labor involved.

j/p please dont put on a type r badge. jus look around and c what u like about other cars around, and ask what exactly they have done if u like it. thats what i did and i love my car.

after market taillights, rims and some new side markers. and for performance just a header, intake and a nice ca back exhaust with the test pipe. not expensive but looks good.

Single stage usually refers to an acrylic laquor, which is about that price range - just a one shot deal, no clearcoating, etc.

If it's got a catalyst, it's a urethane (or "2k")

That's whatcha get when you go to Maaco for $249 (on special currently,) and I'm pretty sure that's why people beat on Maaco so bad.

Gotta pay to play.

If you got a well done primer/base/clear for 350, that's a great deal.

I wouldn't recommend a test pipe for a number of reasons. First off it's illegal, if a cop catches you it's a huge fine. Secondly, it does nothing on an NA motor but make the exhaust extremely loud. Thirdly, it's unpleasant in that it spews fumes.
