unless modified stick with the basic gas. Going to premium SHOULDN'T affect your gas mileage.

But your car probably isn't fully burning it, so you're actually not much cleaner...

No, if the car is tuned for regular, run regular. Running a higher octane can actually hurt the car in the long run as the gas doesn't burn fully leading to a blown cat and carbon buildup in the motor.

Yeah, stick to 87. Always good to follow what the owner's manual tells you to do.

i have a question... now is there a difference between certain brands of gas?? i always thought gas was gas... now my uncle used to work for shell and all he uses on his car is shell gas.. even though its like 20 cents more expensive per gallon... i see the shell commercial saying their gas is cleaner and what not.. does this hold true? or is a mom and pop store gas same as cheveron?

Mom & Pop store probably buys the cheapest gas they can find.

I don't know if the claims Shell makes are true (could be, but I'm also aware that companies do lie to make money). Personally, I always get Marathon gas. Not because I think it's the best gas in the world, but because I have a credit card that gives me 5% back when I fill up there. Although their claims of putting STP engine cleaner in the gas (I'm skeptical about whether they really do) is nice. Everyone has their own reasons.

Bottom line - there's no real answer. We can never say for certain "this is the best brand of gas." And every commercial from every company is going to say how they're the best.

i've always used cheveron and have never had a problem with them... i know AM/PM has the worst gas, shell is also a good gas to use.

eh... just from the buttometer... Citgo gas is crap... I normally use Chevron or Shell. When I HAD a choice, I would always go for MTBE (the additive they used to put in unleaded gas; now it's Ethanol everywhere here) gas, but that's impossible to find where I live now. The biggest reason I would use MTBE unleaded gas was because I got 20% better gas mileage and definitely better HP with it. With "E10" (Ethanol lace unleaded gas), would get 16MPG (my previous car), and with MTBE I would get 20...

Since everything is Ethanol now, I stick with the two that my buttometer tells me the car runs best on... Chevron and Shell.

there are different qualities of gas. u can't really tell just by comparing prices cus the prices depend on the owner and surrounding competition. i always get b.p. gas. a couple of times when i was low on gas and b.p. wasn't around i got it from some mom & pop store and actually noticed a difference in gas mileage i got less miles off the tank than usual. so yea quality is different... there's a reason why name brands become name brands in the first place.

I have no problem getting over 380 miles off a tank of gas in my ES, and I use nothing but 87.

Higher octane equals higher octane.
Higher octane does not equal "better."

More expensive equals more expensive.
More expensive does not equal "better."

I had a girlfriend back when I was in graduate school who truly did believe that more expensive always equals better. Considering I was a grad student, and not born into wealth, I figured it was best not to pursue this relationship for very long!
