I haven't read everyone's post but if no one has said it yet, try those plastic self tapping screws. they do the job fine.

As to the glue, wax and grease remover takes forever to take off the residue. Trying WD-40 now, will update later.
Update:WD-40 'seems' to make the glue come off easier, but in the end I gave up because the process was too slow.
