why the lancer????????
I forgot to mention i got RRM headers and used the same gasket. You can still use it, but it doesn't give you the gurantee there won't be a leak. Try uninstalling your headers and reinstalling them...ride around than take off your headers and you will see a burnt gasket.
for me its simple. i got the 2009 gts for my first car cause i love the look of it and its better than all the other cars in the cheaper car range. (civics, sentra, mazda 3 etc.) i planned on doing only a few mods but the car became my baby and i just wanted to do more and more and more. i think i would mod my FIRST car no matter what it is just beacause the car becomes your baby. =P i hope this makes sense.
I got it because my previous car was totalled and I needed something enjoyable and reliable to get me through college. I will admit that I'm getting the itch for something new, but it's been a great car. It's never left me on the side of the road or anything like that, well... at least not without it being my fault for not properly tightening something. At the time that I got mine, I didn't have time to really look around much (which I do regret) because I was in college and was driving a wreck.
As far as feedback from Evo owners about my car, it has been nothing but supportive. If anything, I've had to quiet them down from urging me to put even more money into it.
Right now, I'm craving a manual trans and rear wheel drive but my little tuned Lancer will have to do until I can find another job.

6) Double check EVERYTHING, and make sure every nut is tightened properly, so you don't have exhaust leaks. If you made sure everything is tightened, and you have a small leak, this might mean you need to replace the gaskets(which I did not have to do), although I plan on it in a week or so, and is generally a smart thing to do.
I'm going to go rub icyhot on my "bad ankles" because not having cruise control causes them to hurt!

reason i got mine is because my94 probegt died [ rack in pinion] cost of replaceing it was more that what the car was worth with the labor involved so i got my ly 03 oz.... .. i may have a evo9 wing & a vg still it isnt a evo.. i know that it is not a evo nor do i claim it is a evo.. the reason i and i assume most people do it is cause they want to be different from other lancers out their.. luckly people out here where im atare cool and understand.. some had lancers before me and went onto evo's... then again isnt that the point of customizing the cars? to be different?
i recently could of bought a 9 from south coast but my monthly would of been higher +100 more than what i pay for my oz ( not impossible, but difficult ) insur would be cheap for me $150 full coverage from 117 for full coverage on my oz... in the end i know its a base lancer and not and evo... i like the way it looks with the wing and vg... then again isnt that what customizing is all about personal preference.. im happy with it

I am a fan of the Lancer as a whole. I really liked the body lines of the previous generation. Which is why I picked up a 2001 Mirage. I put nothing Evolution on it. I believe a Lancer is a Lancer, and an Evolution is an Evolution. The only reason a Lancer should use Evolution parts is when it needs them. The Lancer is a family sedan. The Evolution is a sports sedan. I am about to drop an oem ground effects kit on my car as we speak. I do not support the guys who use the Evolution body components that do not have supporting mods.

I am driving my second lancer and I LOVE it. That is why I bought numero dos after totaling numero uno (my fault). My LS can withstand and out drive some of the evos around me! I am proud of my Lancer and would NEVER trade it for an evo, even if free. I like to race my little hotrod against the other cars on the highway, and sometimes the guys will exit with me and admit they are impressed.
I guess you can say that...
Its like this with me...
I am not going to waste my time converting over a Mirage to an Evo I - 3 or an Evo 4 - 6...
It will never, I mean NEVER be the real car...
They have different chassis codes for a reason. The Evolution, though it may have the same body as the Lancer of the same generation have many add ons to support the performance it puts out. The chassis, though may look the same, is no where near the same. Its much more stiff and tough so it can take beatings. Which is why I am staying in college and plan to buy an Evolution 5 when its all said and done. The car is already 10 years old. By the time I'm done, it'll be about 14 or 15 years old. It'll be right in my price range. That and I intend the keep the GLXi I currently own. People should accept their cars for what they are. Instead of buying it to be something else. If you like the Evolution, get one. Rather it be a few years or many years down the road, get what you want. To many guys buy Mirages and Lancer to try to make them an Evolution. I only know of a hand full of guys who have turn the Mirage and to a force to be dealt with...

I'm too lazy and tired of reading these kinds of threads but I would like to entertain the OP's question.
i take more pride in building a car...don't get me wrong i know the evo's are faster and are more capable but it appeals to me more when a backyard builder comes out with an excellent example of a sleeper, show or race car doing most of their own work. Sorry to generalize but from a lot of Evo owners that i've met they seem to just have money to throw around and pay shops to build their cars and what ends up happening? all their cars look the same and there isn't much creativity in the build all sporting the same mods of off the shelf products. Every once in a blue moon i'll see a good example from an evo owner here that has a different look going or trying to be different but the reason why i stick with crowds like the base lancers of all years and mirages is due to the fact that these guys strive to be different in many forms be it show or go and are more willing to experiment with their cars.
SCLC hasn't been an active group lately because its most dedicated members have their cars in the garage torn apart because were in the middle of projects right now. motor swaps, suspension work, low offset wheel fitments and style's and car pc's are a few things being worked on right now.
i was always never a high hp person...i like lots of hp but i know my skill level in competitive driving isn't good for a car with 400+hp i've driven evo's, mustangs, s13's w/sr20's, an srt4 and previously owned a civic with a b20 vtec-turbo all fun cars to whip around and drive in a straight line but on a course i think a car with 200hp is nice and about all i need for a DD/weekend warrior.
Although i'm going to be a nurse in a few months i'll be able to afford much nicer cars but my game plan is still to stick with the lancer for a project car and get a euro wagon for a DD.
I've always been a fan of Mitsu my father and his brothers owned several Mitsu's in the Philippines and modified them to all stages from 1970's RWD Lancers with 4g63t's in them to hatchback mirages/cyborgs with 4g93t's and AWD to your more common Galant VR4's. If anyone here has ever seen what its like the Philippines you know what they are capable of building trucks from scratch using parts from a diesel montero, with hubs and suspension from a toyota hilux and a live rear end from a ford.

I've witnessed the build of a Jeepney before and its truly amazing to see them weld axles and mix and match parts. Throw away the image of a big shop or warehouse with the latest equipment because these guys about 10 guys are all cramped up inside a 1.5 car garage with a lot of home made tools building these things from practically scratch. One shop i went to actually had a granpa in the back that actually cut and shaped the sheet metal for the jeepneys and the damn thing looks like an old *****'s jeep just stretched! Its seriously a work of art in the making...i think i sat in front of that garage for almost half the day just watching them shape the car.
bottom line is I've got respect for any kind of tuner and so long as you enjoy your car then thats all that matters. Just knowing that the car I'm driving is something I've put my own work into makes me happy and proud to drive it. Those on SCLC know that I'm the bodyshop guy I've rebuilt, repainted and modified my car several times in the past year already and with a few small tweaks my car can look different again from a few day's work in the garage.
Brian at RRM who has sunk his teeth and owned a various amount of cars from a hood-rat VW bug to his current Porsche and Subaru Legacy would tell you that he had the most fun in building his old lancer and that it was a blast to drive.

...The largest Jeepneys are almost bus size. They are built almost completely from scratch. The Filipinos use whatever they can get their hands on. Recycled parts from many different makes & models, and it can be mixed and matched; you may get a Honda engine/transmission and a Hyundai rear axle assembly. The drive train & running gear on Jeepneys are usually not set up for 4x4 off road though.

I have seen several mirage to evo conversions before by professional rally teams here in the US and for the most part its exactly what the mirage guys do to make their cars AWD with the 4g63t [in a brief description i know its a little more involved] the rear gets swapped out for the evo a long with a race fuel cell and this is where the mirage guys cut short...stitch welding the chassis and stitch welding the chassis actually makes the car more rigid than a factory evo...if you look at a real rally car they do the same in addition to putting a roll cage on of course and on the flip side I have seen a few of these Rally service shops here build street evo's out of mirages and they always stitch weld the chassis to make them stiffer i remember back in the late 90's in the east coast there was a good hand full of Mirage/Evo conversions professionally built by Rally teams that were being sold for street use...using Mirage VINs etc. most of them ended up being sold in Florida.

i didnt take the time to read all of the posts in this thread but i would love to start a thread in the evo section called "why and evo???" after driving quite a few turbo lancers i would take a lancer over and evo anyday. they are cheaper and turbo they will spank an evo, even a modded one. some say poor lancer owners, to that i respond poor evo owners.
