The new Mivec 2.4L is weaker than the 1.6L Mivec overseas why?

I'm just curious why that the JDM 1.6L Mivec makes 170ps where as the ralliart Lancer only makes 162hp?

It's just hard to believe that 2.4L with variable valvetrain to be such a weak engine. Most 4 bangers in it's class has more horsepower less displacement and no variable valvetrain. I'm asking what did mitsubishi do to detune it so much. The engine should make at least 190hp for it's size.

is ps (what does that stand for) and hp the same thing? and if so, a 1.6L engine MUST be turbocharged to make 170ps IMO.

i'm hoping the 2.4L will be a very tuneable engine, with lots of power on tap from mods.

do you know what the new 2.4L mivec engine code is by any chance? i've just been wondering.

Do you know what the torque ratings are for each motor (The 2.4L will have a lot more)?

Do you realize the 1.6L would never pass today's emissions?

Do you know where they each produce their peak power and if there would be a major difference if the 2.4L were a DOHC like the 1.6L instead of a SOHC?

The answers to these questions may provide and answer for you.

4G69 - Power: 121kW @ 6000rpm
Torque: 217Nm @ 4000rpm

4G92 - Power: 130kW @ 7500rpm
Torque: 167Nm @ 7000rpm

Why would Mitsubishi bother making a MIVEC engine with SOHC? This is a comparision of 1600cc vs a 2400cc and the 1600cc makes more power, surely with another 800cc the 2400cc should be better than it is? Maybe they should have continued with the 6A12 (2000cc V6 MIVEC) and got it to fit (should be shorter but wider) like some people do.

6A12 - Power: 147kW @ 7500
Torque: 200Nm @ 6000

The 4G92 may claim 175ps(~172hp) and 17kgm(123lb-ft), but power at the wheels of a Lancer MIVEC 1.6L with the 4G92 is a lot less than that. Try around 125whp and 90lb-ft for the real power at the wheels. With some basic ECU tuning you can gain 10hp and 10lb-ft at the wheels. The 4G92 is one of the most exaggerated power outputs I've ever seen.

btw ps stands for "PferdeStarke" and is German for "horse power". 1bhp = 1.01387ps

Maybe because this is a general purpose engine that is meant to see a variety of duty, from their home market Chariot Grandis minivan, to the USDM Ralliart, to the Galant, the Eclipse... You don't see Honda dropping B16B's or K20C's in Odyssey's and Accords do you? This isn't mean to be an end all be all performance motor, but it may have the potential. For such a wide potential of use, it is more important for the engine to have a broad powerband with better low end torque. It also needs to be pretty cheap, so DOHC is out. I don't think Mitsubishi (a company coming back from the brink of disaster) has the resources or the need to make two high end low market engines for mass market use. We've got the 4G63T back, isn't that enough?

Don't tell that to Honda! They were making NA 1.6 liter motors five years ago that make 170PS look pathetic.

There is a Mirage cup in Australia, they run the Mirage cyborg with the 4G92 MIVEC in fairly close to standard condition (I think they have a ralliart ECU, probably exhaust) and I have read that they get close to 150kW (~200hp). If this is true they should have close to the 130kW in standard form.
