Removing Manual Center Console

Only tool needed is a phillips screwdriver.

First open up the storage box between the seats. Remove the two black screws in the bottom.

Pull up from the back of this portion and then pull backwards at a 45 degree angle. The section should release from the tabs that hold it into the next section of the console.

With the first section removed you now see two gold screws and a wiring connection. Disconnect the wiring connection (goes to the cigarette lighter) and remove the two screws.

Next go in to the front passenger side. Underneath the dash there is a small panel that is attached way down in the footwell. This only has 4 snap ins on its backside that you can not see. Just give it a firm, even, slow pull and it'll pop loose. Now you can see that there is one "rivet" holding the console section into a metal bracket. Use your screwdriver to push the center in and then remove the rivet.

Go to the front driver side. There is a large screw "rivet" that you need to back the center out of with your phillips driver. One that is out the panel will snap loose. Again, there is one plastic "rivet" that is attaching the console to a metal bracket. Push in the center and remove it.

Open the ash tray lid on the console. Graph the ash tray with your fingers and pull up and back. It'll snap out. That reveals one more phillips screw down in the bottom. Remove that. (It can be slightly tricky to get to thread out for some reason)

With these all removed unscrew your shift knob. Standard fair of lefty loosey.

Once all these components have been loosened and rmoved the remaining console section should pull up and clear the shift lever.

Wasn't sure how different they were. I read the auto one and ended up not quite following some of what he said and the order I did things in worked out real well. Also didn't know about that ash tray screw until I found it by accident.

Do either of you have the B & M Short Shift Kit? If so besides taking out the console, is there alot more involved with installation? I am considering buying it and wasn't sure how much work was involved in installation.

A shifter is a shifter is a shifter... save yourself about 100 bucks and go buy the streetcustoms/ebay short shifter for the Lancer. Works just as good, just as short of throws... etc... search around and read the reviews of it... But other than removing the console, and a couple minor things that are obvious to get out the shift lever itself there isn't much to the install.

Later.

Just a couple things to keep in mind, that almost ruined my day.

I was just putting more grease on mine since it was starting to squeak pretty bad.

1. The panel on the passenger side should be pulled straight OUT, towards the door. Not towards the front of the car as I thought (the driver side panel sort of slides out after undoing the fastener, figured the passenger was the same). Just pull the thing straight out.

2. DON'T drop the screw for the ashtray part into the opening for the tray. Luckily I hadn't done the rest of the screws/snaps, so I just took it back out. But even then, it fell pretty deep, almost to the floor under the carpet. I used a magnetic screwdriver to get it, but it could get lossed there easily. Seems obvious, but I wasn't careful enough and I didn't know it could fall that far. That almost ruined my day.

3. Careful how you remove the rear part of the console. It says lift it to a 45 degree angle, but you should be able to pull it straight up. I lifted it up like it said and the plastic pieces both fell off and down, like the screw. Except I couldn't use a screwdriver to get em. I used pliers to find them, I was just lucky the things didn't fall as far as the screw. Almost ruined my day too.

Helping a friend diagnose her 03 Lancer's cigarette lighter. it doesn't work and she thinks it happened when she pulled out her phone charger when it was stuck. she may have broken something.

Anyhow, is the process the same for automatics? i haven't looked at the car yet, but i assume there are screws on the automatic shifter so that i can remove it and get the console over it. Can somebody confirm for me? thanks.

Is it under warranty? My dealership covered that for free. My lighter core died (or something like that).

It's similar for automatic, but obviously the shifter area is a bit different.

something like this? Lancer and Eclipses uses the same shifter? So it'll work for my 03 then?
