Question Strangest sound ever made by a lancer...

okay, this is how i was able to produce the sound on an A/T. make sure car is in park and off. turn the key to 'on.' then put your foot on the brake and shift the tranny into D, while the car is off. listen closely under the car, it sounds like a pump or motor or servo or something running for a few seconds. when you move the shifter between D and R you will hear the sound each time. anyone have any idea what that is??

its the little gnomes that run on the tread mills inside the engine to make the car run, duh... but seriously, i have not clue, ive heard my lancer make weird electronic noises when it is off and nothing near it.

im serious, try it for yourself, its a crazy sound, even crazier then the clicking when you have the car off, but the key in the 'on' position for a while.

no, its more like a buzzing, and the car is off, it cant be the gears since nothing is moving.

trust me, when you hear it, the first thing you will think is 'wtf??'

You'll only hear the pump if the ignition is set to on, or acc. It could be the transmission locking into gear. My Accord made a similar noise, but I never really bothered to think about it.

it is the servo that engages the bands to hold the planetary gear sets. my guess is it is the high reverse band that holds the drum of the housing for the clutch pack that is enganged in reverse.

Heard that noise before...key in radio on (between songs) sounds like an electric current running thru a thin piece of ratteling metal. No idea what it is, maybe the ecu checking something, but car is not in closed circuit??

:bows: thank you, after reading it i made myself go huh too.

I will test it out tonight but i am almost certain it is the servos in the tranny applying and releasing bands.

I hear that sound in just about every automatic Mitsubishi ever made. Especially on DSM cars, from Avengers to Endeavors. It is even louder on the outside of the car, but people usually don't notice it over engine, A/C, radio, etc..

Nothing to worry about.
