Taillight bulb not on at times

So I have an issue with my passanger side taillight with it lighting up. When I push on the breaks, both of my bulbs light up just fine. When I turn on my lights, only my driver side light lights up but when I use the breaks, they both light up. What can I do to fix this? I just got a ticket and need this fixed this weekend! Please help.

Don't feel dumb. Clearly half the people in this thread didn't know either...

Happens to all of us.

indeed.
The bulb is like two bulbs in one.
That is why you had brake lights but no tail light.
There are two filament wires instead of one.

This is why I always say "start with the basic and small things first, then move on from there"
