When I first got my lancer I pulled up to a stop light on 119th and Blue Valley ( if you care) right next to two chicas in the same car, same color. I toasted them off the line and by the top of 2nd gear I had nearly 4 car lengths on them. Had to be an auto. An older celica was in the third lane but I didn't even notice him until I was in third gear. I guess he wanted to bang through some gears too! But my point was her lancer was more than likely stock and so was mine, only reason must of been hers was an automatic. You know what it's like when you pull up next to the same car as yours!

In auto vs manual debate, manual usually win if both cars have equal mods. Auto will be relying on driver error like bouncing fuel cut or short shift it w/o every hitting its sweetspot within the powerband.

Manual will kill auto if holding revs. Auto will make manual become instant better driver if both starts out at 0 rpm launch . . . under duress, driver error comes into play. The latter does not compensate for disparity if a C5 manual vette vs an auto VW bug . . . the manual driver has to misshift about twice to lose.

Stockwise, the deathnail of auto is third gear. The gear falls below its sweetspot within the powerband.

Somewhat off topic but...having driven cars of different transmissions, especially Civics, the Lancer auto tranny is quite good for what it is. The difference between my Lancer and my Civic (both autos) is extremely different. The Lancer has good throttle response and such....when you press down on the pedal it goes. The Civic, on the other hand, seems slow to respond and when it responds, it makes a half-assed effort. Of course, Honda automatic transmissions are notoriously bad....no wonder that on the Civic/Honda boards there is a stigma against auto cars. Any enthusiast who has a Honda has a manual. Why? Their autos suck ***, that's why!
