Boost or Evo IV-VI Swap
Boost or Evo IV-VI Swap
I was planning on buying an Evo 8 Turbo kit, a friend has a million stock parts and I was pretty much getting everything but gauges for $500. Thats a GREAT ****ing deal.
My car has been in the shop with awful idle issues for 2 and a half weeks, and the mechanic was asking if I planned to boost. My car has 160,xxx miles and he suggested that I don't boost with that many miles. Modding an old car brings many problems, if I boost then things start to break and then I throw thousands of dollars fixing a max HP of 250 and FWD car... He has a good point, my car is old, but it's MY car. I want to fix it and have it for a long time. Boosting it is something I always wanted to do. He said throw in an Evo 4-6 engine, go on ebay and find one for $1.5k-$2k and he will throw that in, fix the AWD issue etc.
So being I never looked into it, I've tried to but couldn't find any threads, what does it all take to put an Evo 4-5 long block into my 2003 OZ Rally. Other than the whole 7 bolt engine. What other things would I need to take care of if I did this? He said we might have to change cross-members or something? I don't know... I'm here asking because it's something I am really considering now... Who the **** drops a whole Evo motor into a normal lancer just cause? I'm sure people have but hell not enough if I searched for an hour and only found people asking the same question and getting dick answer like "You dont, you buy an evo" or "Go search". Well, I searched and I'm not buying an Evo.

That's a pretty good deal on the turbo kit. You would need a different manifold though.. Also, if you're motor blows up. They are only 4-500 bucks.
If you were goin to do a swap. I wouldn't go with a Evo 4-6 motor. One guy has successfully put an Evo 8 in his car and adapted it to AWD. You're talking a lot of money. Like money that would buy an Evo. The Evo subframe will bolt up to the lancer. However, you will have to do custom work in the rear to make it work.
I would go with the 4g64, it's very similar to the Evo 8 block and it has more displacement. Also, the motors are cheaper to pick up and build. You can also bolt on and Evo head or Kia head to make it DOHC. If you want to keep it fwd, cheaper route. Just swap your gears into the eclipse tranny and use your stock axles. You also only need to make one motor mount, I believe passenger side.

I have known a lot of people to boost an older engine. Did the mechanic do a compression and leak down test? If those are good then thats a good start. Could always drop the oil pan and pull the head and just do a good visual inspection of things. As long as there is no current issues with the motor and everything is installed good with a great tune the car should be fine. Like they say though "you got to pay to play". There will always be that chance it becomes a money pit.
I would go with the turbo kit. It's cheap solution to solid horse power gains and that's exactly what you want with a fwd car. Yes your car is old and something will likely break, but an 03 is the perfect age where you can find cheap replacement parts off of donor/part out cars on Craigslist and local Pick n Pulls easily. If your thinking about buying an Evo engine you minus well just buy and Evo--not trying to be a dick. Follow your dreams, build your affordable fwd race car
Thanks everyone my issue now is selling my car. Decided its just not what I wanna do. I've done my modding but power is something I have to avoid with my insurance rates and track record for speeding. Id love to just boost around, slow car in front? Switch lanes little throttle fly around done. But its for someone else to do not me. I wish I could have bought that turbo kit I still could too which makes me mad. But my motor mount went my water pump is going my lifters are going I have an exhaust leak now from when my Mount snapped and ****ed up my exhaust pipe somewhere from the downpipe to my cat. I'm just done with it now. Fixing the lifters and mount and selling.
