How does their quality compare to the commonly available USA filters? What would it be equivalent of?

From what I understand these are Japanese OEM? I think Honda uses them as OEM. The backside of the filter is all Japanese writing.

I only change mine once every year or 12-14 months.. I use k&n filter in my lancer good upto 15k miles exp but worth it as I don't have to change it often
