Newbie looking for buying advice

I'm looking to buy a Used car for about $6000.

My #1 choice right now is a 1996 Infiniti I30 that I see at the dealership. It has perfect maintenance records (I checked with Infiniti myself, it was serviced at the local dealer). It has 90,000 miles, a power sunroof, heated leather seats, 200 watt bose sound system, wood trim, power seats and power everything, alarm, ABS, V6, etc.

Other car I'm looking at is a 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer ES with 55k miles on it. It has next to nothing. It has power windows and locks, and doesn't even have ABS. It looks a lot nicer on the outside and is a lot more compact car. It would get better gas mileage. It's also a far newer car with less miles but I've heard Mitsubishis arent the most reliable to begin with.

Any input? Other car suggestions in my range? I'm definitely not interested in American cars - I'm a college student and do not want to deal with much maintenance. I only plan to keep the car for 2 years and most probably will use it to roll around town with friends, that's why I'm digging the spacious and luxurious I30 right now.

Also, the Mitsu dealer just got in a new Blue 02 Lancer with 60k miles on it. It looks really sharp and it may have went through a 60k maintenance at the Mitsu dealer. That would be really helpful - as I said I am not looking to spend much on maintenance and up keep, I don't have the time or money for it.

In my opinion, I would get the blue lancer because of the gas mileage and just because I like them. That is only my opinion. You should do whatever you feel like and want.....good luck in finding a vehicle.....

That's an interesting variety between 2 cars there. What do you want it for? Do you want to toy with it? Look cool? Look rich? Look poor? Just cruising around town. I think the Infiniti is cool for general use. But if you want something to toy with, it's a dog of a car.

I am looking to keep the car stock.

I am looking for a comfortable car that I can roll around town with my friends in for about 2 years and have no worries about maintenance.

I also do not want to worry about the car being broken or stolen into - I live in a ****ty neighborhood and if I get a Lancer I will certainly have to invest in an alarm.

I would get the Infiniti if you just want something to have for a couple years and not worry about.

Although I'd say you have it backwards - I'd want the alarm for the Infiniti, not the Lancer!

Maybe the Infiniti comes with an Alarm? But yeah, sounds like you want the Infiniti. It might be a higher risk of theft, but it is 8 years old so it's probably not high up on the favorites list for stealing.

The 96 I30 looks like an old piece of **** on the outside. It also comes with a built-in security system as do almost all Infiniti's I believe.

All I'm saying is that the Infiniti would be more fun to cruise around in, which you said you want to do.

To be honest, I don't know if I could handle driving a stock Lancer for 2 years...

I think that you should get the infiniti because of the way you are talking about staying stock....just my professional opinion...

Drove em both again today with my dad. Lancer is an amazingly boring car when you compare it to an Infiniti. I have decided to get the Infiniti if it is still available in a few days when I get my job offer (which it should be). I checked the brakes/tires on the Infiniti today and tried to push it to high speeds. Both tests passed with flying colors.

But if your looking for good gas and a low maintnence car i would go with the mitsubishi (just cause its newer) Plus here in vegas the infinitys get jacked quick!!!!! The lancer is a great car and its cheap, plus it will run forever with verry little in the tank.
