One gigantic '04 Lancer rumor thread.
2003-2004 lancer? anyone read about this
Supposedly, according to Motor Trend, the new lancer will have 160-170 hp. Why i posted this, i dont know, but ive been seeing alot of people hoping for some more oomph out of the lancer model.
take care.
take care.
There are a lot of non-Evo Lancer rumors going about. Supposedly we could be getting a turbo Lancer (not the Cedia since American gas will kill the GDI 4G93) but the 4G94 we all know and love will remain. The Mirage has been phased out and the Lancer is/will be taking its place at the bottom rung of the Mitsu product line.
I have to agree with Paul, I don't think the Lancer will be upped at all in HP considering the Mirage will be no longer....BUT.......what i noticed .....
Subaru has a advantage over Mitsubishi at the moment....
there lineup consists of:
2.5RS - 160hp
WRX - 220hp
STI (coming definately) - 270hp
Mitsubishi Lineup:
Lancer - 120hp
Evolution - 260hp
see the way i see it...if u cant afford a WRX u get a 2.5RS cuz its similar , it has AWD and it is pretty quick ........
now if u look at mitsubishi ...if you cant afford a EVO...what u gonna get aa OZ LANCER? i doubt that....
i dunno just my opinion i hope this makes sense...

I seriously doubt that we have anything to worry about as far as an engine change is concerned. Simply because what is left out of the equation is the Eclipse.
While it's not a sedan, I think it nicely fills in the gap, price wise and HP wise between the Lancer (which shouldn't even be in the same division, really) and the Evolution. Simply put, a Lancer with more bite would also add to the price, and, if it was faster (or even had that lovely turbo) than the eclipse, it would definitely hurt Eclipse sales, and edge it out as the middle weight before the Evo. That, and the Lancer is meant as a econo-car with street fighter looks at a lower than average price tag. If anything I'd expect a "Si"-like edition that might have, oh, I don't know... dual overhead cams or something bizarre to eek out an extra 20 or 30 hp. Turbo? Doubt it, despite the rumors. N/A with a little extra oomph in addition to our current model? More likely.

Oh, and as a disclaimer: I don't think, or have any info to back up a 20-30 hp gain from a "simple" DOHC redesign. I think that just fit in the category of "bizarre." On further thought, I'd expect maybe something more like a rigging of the Galant/Eclipse4cyl/Outlander engine, and a choice of the sportronic or manual. Engine change, but, not a "new generation" of engine.

I agree, they can just put the 2.4 L enigne to the OZ as an option. if you want basic , 4 cylinder, then the 2.0 remains also.

Hey my $0.02.
Look at Mazda, the protege has been around for quite some time and its been a SOHC with about 125- 130hp. Now in 2001 the MP3 was released and it was DOHC with 140 hp. Now the new Mazdaspeed is being released with 170hp and Turbo. So maybe Mitsu is looking to compete the Lancer with the protege. I dunno but if this is true about the 03-04 Lancer, you can rest assure i'll be dropping that engine into my car.

I hear what your saying, but, look at the "evolution", no pun intended. That, and the Mazdaspeed protoge will be an extremely limited release, more so that the MP3.
Maybe a "Ralliart" Lancer? That would be good for several reasons. That would make turbos and "kits" (see spare parts) a little more readily available and cheaper. Hell, just an easy, factory exhaust manifold would be nice... hmmm (chin rub).
Seriously though, I think the Mazdaspeed is a poor example, in that since it is such an extremely limited release, it would be kinda like really saying there was serious competition between the Lancer and the SVT Focus, you know what I mean? Really, I don't expect anything like that seeing as it will cause competition with the Eclipse, which is a major mainstay, and jewel of the US Mitsu line, and if detracting sales, they might have to worry about losing that "Best selling Import Coupe" in a few years... think splitting the vote.
Anyway, I'd foresee a that larger 4 cyl upgrade before turbo/super, or a new generation of the 4G94. Well, at least as far as a wide release is concerned. Maybe Mitsu will get smart, throw on a LSD, and a turbo, sell 700 units, and get the Lancer name out of the magazine gutter. Like a friend of mine said, the only reason the Civic is so widely regarded is that something like the Si even exisists, even if it isn't selling.

Mitsubishi is going to make something out of the Lancer OZ package. For '04, it will get a 2.4L engine with at least 160-170 hp, plus a beefed up suspension, high performance rolling stock, and seats designed to keep you in place while enjoying this new found perfomance. We don't expect much change to the exterior appearance-there finally will be go "go"to match the "show." As a competitor with Ford SVT ZX5, Nissan Sentra SE-R, Honda Civic Si, and the like, Mitsubishi will have the car we've been asking for to bridge the 120-hp price leader Lancer and the upcoming $30,000 plus 270-280-hp EvoVIII.

you are already going "European".I mentioned in a few posts, a while back, that the largest Japanese conglomerate is out of $$$. They're going broke.
Mitsubishi licensed their name and complete line of automobile brands to Daimler, then just sold 43% of their truck business outright. I think the Japanese group still own a small % of their original company, while subsidiaries are splitting up the rest. Don't believe what you read on the web, there are always disclaimers...but, MMC is well known for selling out to Daimler in return for reserved status as a the sole "Global Alliance". It's the result of a plan that's been over 60 years in the making.
When you buy an Evo, what you get, essentially, is Tommi Makinen in jackboots.@Got Rice? Hell no! Honda and Toyota are the only 100% Japanese Auto manufacturers left, and most of their cars are built in the US, India, Indonesia and now, China. Renault owns Nissan, so your 70K Skyline GT-R is essentially, a poodle. Enjoy the dream, my friends, while it still lasts...
