Super Off-Topic N00b Question Thread

my lancer is the first car i have given a crap about, i want to take car of it, so i have some questions.

first off, gas. what is the difference between 87, 89, and 92 octane? does it matter what kind of gas you run on a N/A motor? I have been running 92 octane simply because I had to use it my first fillup and didn't want to mix with lower octane after that. is it okay to keep using 92, or should i switch to 87 ?

I'm doing my I/E/H bolt ons before anything serious, so far i have my injen SRI and greddy EVOII exhaust, next will be the header. I plane on getting the RRM header but have been reading about the CEL problem and the fix for it, how much is it going to cost for the header and the 02 sensor thingy to fix the CEL problem, and anything else i'm forgetting ?

and last, I shaved my emblems, but I think I may have damaged the clearcoat using a toothbrush to help get the tape off, what can I do? I have washed & put a thick coat of wax on, but I can still see the outline of the letters and a bit of scratching

Only use 87, unless you get the piggy. The new header from RRM has the cel elim. already on it I believe. Try a clay bar on the scratched areas; heck, do the entire car. Hope this helps.

You only need to increase the octane when you either go turbo or get some sort of ECU adjustment/high performance engine mod (ie pistons or cams).

after i/e/h i was thinking cams or forged internals ( pistons & rods ) does that sound like a good next step if i plan on staying n/a?

Forged internals with N/A? Only if you plan on nitrous. Forged internals are just stronger. That's why turbo and NOS guys use them. Not needed for I/H/E.

The only N/A internal work I could suggest would be to raise the compression ratio. RRM and Buschur stopped making those pistons, so you'd have to contact Wiseco or someone and get them custom done.

IF you raise the CR with pistons, then you'd want to run 92 octane. Until then, if you only have I/H/E, just stick with 87.

talked to rock, i guess after my header i'm getting a pb ( i'll go up to 89/92 oct then ) and then ported IM & TB

after that if I want more, I might go to forged pistons & rods and try a small wet shot ( less than 50 )

you might want to read up on some horror stories of people using Nitrous might change your idea of it.

Get some rubbing compound (3M make a good one, you can find it at Autozone). Despite what the name suggests, it's a liquid. The will remove fine scratches and swirls in clearcoat. You could also buy some clearcoat spray to touch it up if the damage is really bad.

i havn't found any horror storys of people using a small spray on a built up engine, i've seen plenty of them for ~50 shot dry or wet on stock internals

Why? Most of the horror stories are people melting/damaging their STOCK pistons. If he goes forged, he should be fine.

I agree^ As long as you use forged pistons and rods you should be fine. Ive never read of anyone blowing their motor with nitrous while using forged internals. But for I/H/E stock internals will give you the same performance gains as forged ones and theyll handle it just fine.

yea thats true forgot he wanted forged. But still Nitrous is a big step in my book i personally would never use it unless i got it really really cheap and had a crap cheap civic so i can learn to do the install/screw with the engine.
