200,000 miles
I'm looking at a 2002 lancer ls with 132,000 miles on it. It has been regularly serviced and seems to be in good condition. I was wondering if i can expect this car to last at lease to 200,000 miles if its well taken care of. So if anyone knows how well lancers or mitsubishi's in general last let me know. Thanks.

Right i know that. I take good care of my cars but i want to know if the car is going to give up on me before i get my money out of it. From reading the other thread it looks like lancers last pretty good if you take care of them.
I've had a few Mitsubishis last me over 200,000. My Lancer only has 75,000 on it so far, but I fully expect it to outlast my best of 230,000.
Take good care of it and it'll last.

Its in descent condition, a few scratches here and there but over all not bad. The bank told me my payment would be around 160 a month but with 2 jobs it wont be a problem. I just dont want the car to fall apart in like a year or 2.
First thing I'd do is a compression test; that'll tell you how "good" the condition of the engine actually is. But I don't expect there to be any problem... 71k and going on my '03 here.
Pull the dipstick, wipe it clean... Is there any oily residue left? Varnish? Basically if that stick isn't clean top to bottom, they didn't change the oil often enough, and the rest of the engine will look the same inside..
Check under the oil cap.... Any sludge, crust, milky looking oil? Milky oil is bad, real bad... Its a sign of oil/antifreeze mixing and thats usually a dead head gasket or a water pump thats chewed through the block... Crust and sludge are also signs of poor maintenance... If they didn't change the oil enough, then you can bet they didn't do much else either...
Find out when the timing belt was last changed, they are due every 60K...
Automatic? Pull the dipstick, the fluid should be a nice red color... Brown or black is bad, and points to worn out clutches and poor maintenance...
Every thing else is minor so long as the tranny and engine look good, you're set...
