Side Exhaust?

i'm planning on doing a side exhaust on my ES using a flowmaster 60 series delta.. as soon has i get my tax refund.. and i was wondering if anyone's done this yet? if not i'll deff do a write up.. and also i was wondering if anyone could tell me if it would benifit me or not to remove the resonator? cause from what i understand it's just there to limit sound..

um are you sure you want do do this? how far up is it going to be? I think i saw some pictures of it before and it wasn't really all that great looking in my opinion. Plus if you're staying N/A then a lot of people on the boards will tell you that our cars NEED backpressure and opening up the exhaust that early will just lose more low end torque. I say...if u have a decent catback now...stay with it and use that tax return towards something nice...like starting a turbo fund....Mmmm yummy boost

and if i remember correctly you wont gain too much from removing the resonator...eh? i could be wrong

well right now i have the stock cat, resonator and a stupid a** 3A racing exhaust and it looks stupid.. and it's just and open *** pipe.. so with a flowmaster i'd acutally be gaining back pressure.. but i need to remove or relocate the resonator to but the flowmaster in.. and still have space to bring the exhaust out in front of the rear drivers side wheel.. and if it works how i want.. you wont be able to see it much anyways.. i'm gonna by some high temp black paint and paint the end pipe.. i also dont have to pay to have it installed.. family friend welds for lockeed martin and has his own MIG so he'll help me with it.. i just have to buy the piping, muffler, and hangers.. and i'm only opening it up to 2.25.. i'm tired of the folgers can that came on it..

** also: anyone fiberglass really well? i need and evo style rear bumper cover fit to a 03 lancer w/out a exhaust cutout..

if you look under you car on the drivers side in front of the rear tire theres a small channel.. that's where it's gonna be.. not too far up in there.. it'll be at the same level as the stock piping..

Should be interesting. Remove the stock resonator and place the muffler where the resonator is. Then just run the tailpipe out the drivers side. Alot of SRT-4s do this. They just run the resonator tho. I dont recommend this if your NA as it will have no back pressure.

Also just fiberglass the cutout in. Just try it multiple times until you get it figured out.

I think if you do it you should use 2 tips, that way its spreads it out more and looks a little better than one strange pipe there. and as long as you only do it on one side I think it would look fine. I thought about doing this as well but my magnaflow looks too good in the rear to cut up. You could also have a body shop neatly cut out and round out an exhaust cut out on the side skirt to make it look more like it belongs. I say go for it.

I helped build an exhaust for a C6 that had the downpipes dump out right behind the front wheels. Looked badass but it was a pain in the *** to tuck the turbos in the fenders.

if your na i dont think youd be able to get it quiet enough to run side pipes without getting pulled over.

i'm going for it.. and mine willlook 10X better than that bastards ****.. lol but yeah i'm replaceing the resonator with a flowmaster.. so it won't be any louder than it is now.. and mine wont be near as far up as that guys.. it's gonna come out right where the little channel thing is on the 03 es.. but yeah i'll post up a how-to when i do it..

Awesome, and yeah, do remember that without a turbo you're going to get all the really loud exhaust notes with or without a flowmaster, it will just be a lower tone. Can't wait to see pics.

IMO side exhausts on a FWD sport compact are kinda lame, especially if the car is a 4 banger. It just looks weird because firstly it's not a true twin exhaust setup, it's basically a normal exhaust with a Y pipe in there. Secondly it serves no real purpose and on a car like ours (4 door) it just looks weird and is a potential hazard (people could easily burn their legs on the exhaust). If you want a quiet exhaust, I recommend a greddy catback.

Well it would definately will be more for looks. I said to get the twin tips just because it would look better than one weird pipe. and a 4 banger with one pipe would be like a v-8 with 2 pipes

You have an N/A engine and doing what you are planning on doing will cause you to lose power. N/A engines need backpressure to produce power. With an N/A motor you will need a full exhaust that is properly tuned with the right diameters and bends to produce more power. The set-up that you are going with will only work if you are turbocharged. With turbocharged engines the bigger the diameter and shorter the length the better. Actually no exhaust is the best exhaust with turbo engines.

I just think it looks like a FWD pretending to be a RWD car, much like how some people put wider tires on the rear of a civic, it just looks out of place.
