audio install questions
I just bought a 12" sub and 240 watt amp, and my friend is going to do the install. When he asked me how many watts my alternator runs, I had no idea what to tell him. Does anyone know how many watts the stock alternator runs on a 2002 Lancer OZ? Also, what is the easiest and cleanest way to run the wires to the front of the car? Thanks.
I am unsure how many watts the alternator runs but your car can handle just 240 and make sure you have a good battery also and installing a system is pretty easy. All you need is a amp wiring kit from walmart and your set.
alternators run in amps not watts the stock 02 lancer alt produces 85-90 amps which is sufficent enough to run 1000 watts roughly with out head light and int light flicker. so 240watts will be pretty easy to run. how many watts is the sub rated for?
The stock alternator puts out around 90 amps, as kermitmiers stated. 240 watts is nothing, mine pulls 1400 rms all day long and the headlights barely dim with the big 3 done.
The easiest way to run the wire I found, is to attach the wire to the battery with a ring terminal soldered on, ran to the back of the bay, zip tied down snug, and through the grommet on the passenger side of the firewall, right behind the strut tower. I could easily fit my 1/0 gauge wire thorugh there. From there just run it down through the kick pannel, under the door and seatbelt trim, underneath the bottom of the seat and tucked under the back half of the rear seat, and into the trunk.
I ran my RCAs and remote wire through the center counsel, and under the carpet and under the rear seat into the trunk.

OK thanks. So my alternator is set. I dont know how many watts my sub is rated for, but I dont plan on maxing it out, so it should be fine. What gauge wire would be necessary, and how much length do I need?
It depends on the amps wattage rating, if the 240 watts is nominal (RMS) or Max, here is a chart for the power rating:

So, if its rms I would go with 8 gauge, just to be safe and make sure the amp is getting enough power, and it leaves a little leeway if you are going to upgrade later on.
Oh yeah, another thing, when you are pulling the wire through the firewall, you have to pull the glovebox out and you will have a clear shot at the grommet through there.
EDIT: Forgot to add how many feet needed, I use 17 feet, you may want to add an extra 1-3 feet depending on where you are mounting the amp
