Question Painting Tail Lights?

I have ordered some VHT Nite Shades tint spray for my tail lights. I was wondering if anyone has ever blacked out their headlights with Nite Shades, and then masked off some sort of pattern and painted the rest of the tail light black for example? That way during the day the tail light would look black and at night the tail lights would light up whatever pattern that had been masked off. If this helps here is the steps I was thinking about doing.

1. Spray entire tail light with VHT Nite Shades tint spray (apply until desired darkness)
2. Wait until Nite Shades has cured
3. Mask off pattern on lights so that Brake, Turn Signal, and Reverse lights still will shine through.
4. Paint light with factory matching paint (which I have seen online custom mixed to match factory paint and it comes in spray cans...in my case labrador black)
5. Wait for it to dry
6. Remove mask
7. Paint factory clear coat over entire tail light (order off the same site...factory pearl clear coat)
8. Wait for it to dry and then reinstall

So I am wondering if people think that this is a good idea/bad idea, and I would like to know if anyone has ever tried this before. If my car wasn't black I think this would look even better on a white car or yellow if the paint on the tail lights matched the factory paint.
