is it worth turboing a lancer
is it worth turboing a lancer
i got a 03 lancer oz, all i got done to in right now, is i have my ecu reflushed, a custom evo n1 exhaust, and a sri, but im really want to turbo it, but is it really worth the money to turbo the car? can u guys help me out
ya know it's tough to say. I see a lot of lancers that are heavily modified and somtimes turbo'd and I stand here wandering why they just weren't patient enough to maybe save for a little and buy a used Evo. If you think about it by the time you buy a lancer then get a turbo kit installed and tuned correctly you're obviously going to need supporting mods like clutch, full exhaust, possibly axles and stuff like that. If you add it all up you could have bought a used evo. Good luck with your decision.
If its what you want.. do it. Modifying any vehicle isnt "worth" it. You see all the time 15K invested.. for sale for 9k. You never get back what you put into a vehicle, but if its what you want do it. Or save for an evo if thats what you want.
Yeah what he said about "not worth it". You'll never get back what you put into it but who cares, it's a hobby. I don't know if any hobbies that people constantly spend money on that ever get their money back. Do whatever you want man. Just be a smart and patient shopper and you'll eventually find some nice deals. good luck
Another important thing to consider - the secondary costs to support the turbo.
Biggest one for street - you got lots of extra power, you got lots of extra brake? - "proper" street brakes for about 250-300fwhp about $1000 to sort out.
More torque/hp - got a stiffer/more clamping force clutch? another grand to sort that out.
handling - sending over 200hp to the front wheels is always more work for you - u got equal length drive shafts?, beefier u joints? - not to mention the rest of the suspension to safely handle more power
.....blah
Unless you are set on doing this as a learning experience and pride of ownership, and NEVER want to recoup money out of it....go for it.
Otherwise find a stock (or close as you can) used Evo - you'll spend time learning to drive vs learning how to build vehicle systems - depends on what you're into actually. The Evo is NOT a cheap car to maintain unless you have the time and tools to properly service one - you'll still eat through supply parts.
I've done both build and buy.

Nobody can tell you if something is worth it, it is a completely personal opinion. I got very close to turboing my car, I had the kit (sans a few pieces), the piggyback ECU needed to control it and the gauges to monitor it but as you can tell by the car I drive I backed out at the last moment. After reading posts by people who had turboed their lancer I decided it wasn't for me personally. I suggest you do a lot of reading and make choice for yourself.

I'd say yes but no if you have constraints such as budget and or unrealistic expectations. Right now we have 5 different guys over 300 hp. but they work hard at it. A standard kit from us will be mostly manitainence free and give you 200 w.h.p. THink about or call us. I will give you the honest pro and con list based on your situation.

depends on what you want. if you're like me and just wanted a fun and quick daily driver, then yes it's worth it if you have the money. i was never expecting to make record-breaking numbers b/c i realized the car's limits and potentials way before i decided to turbo...besides, right now is probably not the best time to own an evo (or some other high-performance car) for me because i'm still young...i have other priorities. i'd say it was worth it for me because i also learned a lot about cars...but it's your car, it's your call on what you wanna do. we can only give u advice.
for the amount of money your spending to turbo it and the price depreciation of the car, id say no sell it take the turbo money and buy a nicer car unless money isnt a problem for u or you plan to drive this car until its flat out worth nothing
It depends on what you are trying to get out of your car. If you want something with *****-out insane performance potential, then no. If you want a daily driver with a little "umph" then I would say yes. I keep asking this same question to myself, considering I eventually would love to own an Evo. Seeing as I'm only 20 right now and a majority of the Evo owners in the early to mid 20 age range are still paying for insurance with their buttholes, I figure keep this car and mod as I like, make it fast to prepare to handle the power of an Evo, all while saving little by little for a downpayment or whatever, and when the time comes take the plunge. I know it will take alot of time and hardwork (money) to fullfill this goal, but I have a goal that I plan on sticking with.
You just have to get a car thats "worth modifying."
An EVO 8 RS can be bought for 15K, be modified, and then be sold for 20K+.
Same thing goes for cars like the Supra, and WRX STi.
I've seen 20K Twin Turbos later sold for 40K to 60K.
Unfortunately, Lancer's aren't that kind of car.
