Gratuitous Picture of My Cars
No offense taken here on any of the comments.
I would say that for most normal driving, the Porsche is basically a status symbol. However, when the car is pushed, that's where it shines. When I drove my 944 on the street, lots of cars could dog it in a straight line. Hell, my '08 Lancer is faster in a straight line than the 944. But once I got onto the track, the 944 was a revelation! The handling was incredible!!! The engine can be run near red-line all day without a hiccup. And the brakes can be abused all day without letting you down (assuming you've kept up with the maintenance). There's something to be said for a 50 year heritage of endurance racing that does show through in the street cars. I was tracking my stock 944 with over 200K miles on the original motor, and the only problem I ever had was when the original clutch finally failed at 230K.
It appears that Subaru and Mitsu have put a lot of their hard-earned experience into the WRX and EVO, so I'm not knocking those cars. Just saying that there are reasons to pay a premium for a Porsche.
