i haven't taken apart my dash yet so i don't know what goes on back there...but can you just replace the existing led's with red ones instead of painting or using red film? or is that just too easy to be the solution...if you can replace the bulbs, where online can you order them?

I've ordered the red LED array for my dome light, and the red incandescents for certain other lights.

The red film we were discussing was for the clock. Since no one has posted a how-to on how to change that, we were just considering coating the screen with red A/V gels.

The current bulbs in there aren't LED's, which is why they're so hard to work with. If they were LED's, it's just a matter of changing the colour LED.

how do you change the ash tray lights? and cig lights, just take off the center console? as well cas the gear lights

Ashtray lifts right out, the bulb sits right there in the open. For cig lighter you have to remove the center console starting from the flip-up box. Once console is removed, shifter light is also on the driver side of the center console, although it's a bigger bulb and that's the only one in my car that's painted with enamel now.
