Body Kit rumor
Body Kit rumor
well the rumor here in slidell is that if you paint your body kit and put it on without having it on there for about a week unpainted, the paint will chip. is there any truth to this? i mean i've been reading on this forum for atleast about a year i think and i've never heard anything about it. hell, i haven't even heard about it in the ford probe forums when i had one of those. any info is appreciated.

I don't know the answer to you question, but I think you might have answered the question many people were asking them-self. Which is:
Q:Why do those ricers drive around with unpainted body kits?
Now we have the answer... A rumor

Lots of people paint kits off the car and put them on... so that tells me that is a rumor...(wouldnt it chip in the same way if there was any truth to this) Just wait for kareem to find this thread ( he knows alot about this stuff so he will deffinitly confirm that its a rumor)
The only benefit I can imagine is the following:
By having the kit on and unpainted, the resin and material that were used to make it would dry even more by driving around unpainted. The pores would not be blocked by any paint which would allow a much better breahting. But then again, when do you buy a kit that has not already dried for a while?

thats definately a rumor. its all in the prep work. the only reason i would hear someone say dont paint your kit before you put it on the car is for fitment and color matching issues.
the only way a paint chips is from improper/insufficient prepping. using wrong products, uneven and unclean surfaces etc. other than rubbing your bumper up against a curb your paint shouldn't chip if it was properly painted.

If you cant afford to paint a body kit, then you cant afford a body kit.
i think the reason behind this rumor is this, and it actually makes sense a little bit if you think about it. the body kit especially if it is made of urethane is going to stress in different places per kit. every kit is different no matter what anyone thinks. especially when you get into urethane peces. no tow urethane pieces are ever the same. so if you drive around with your kit on your car for a week or so it allows the kit to settle into the place where it will sit most of the time that you are driving it. if you then paint it there will not be as much stress on the paint. but as was said earlier the only reason for paint chips is poor prep work or poor spraying. if your adhesion promoters and flex additives are put into the paint in the proper amounts you should not have a problem. but if you are still not sure then i suggest you drive around fora week with an unpainted kit. my car will be driving around for about a year unpainted, but that is becasue i am doing a lot of custom work to it.

I never heard of anyone's kit paint chipping. I personally would put it on before painting it for fitment, and leave it unpainted for a month and then paint it. I did that with the 92 eclipse I had and the paint was fine.
when you paint the kits the paint shop uses a chemical in the paint that lets the paint flex...I used to call it adding flex when I worked part time at a bodyshop. The fiberglass shouldn't dry anymore(I think) because by the time you get it, it has been baked and Jell-Coated to seal it up...my $0.02
