There are two splined sections on a Mitsu shaft. The end that goes in the tranny is splined for a CV Bearing that snaps in to the transaxle. The other end slides into the wheel hub. I can't imagine the hubs being different but the shafts are probably not the same length. Either way if you have a wrecked car then you will have everything you need. Be prepared to swap harnesses as well since the auto and manual ecu both have different connectors. Your auto ECU, transmission control unit, harness, and transmission could all be sold to recoup some of your losses. If you want to have a leg up on the standard OZ then you could do a F5M41(tranny out of a 1.5L mirage). It has a shorter first and second gear that would put you quickly out in front. It is the same as the F5M42 except for gearing and a neutral position switch. The OZ also has a larger throttle body and an exedy clutch so I would use those as well. Good luck if you do decide to do it. It will require a lot of work but will be worth it in the end.

OT- kinda: are the differentials in the Lancer and 'rage the same? I'm trying to expand my options for LSD beyond the extant $900-$1600 options currently readily available.

Thanks

That would be a better question for Andy on the Mirage Forum. I don't know for sure but I would imagine that they are since both the Mirage and Lancer use the F5M4x transaxles. If you contact him he would be able to tell you. He is also in the process of sourcing LSDs from Japan and I believe the cost he is looking at would be around $450 - $500. They are the Mitsubishi made LSDs.

lsd in a lancer would be fun. but still no word on this car yet. and i start college in spring, community college, but still $$, and i should be making more money in oct after my b-day, more $$. so i am now thinking of making a beefier auto, i already know of the torque convertor, but can i buy different gearings? and is their "racing" or performance gearing for auto mirages? thanks for the mirage trans swap idea though. having one of those would be nice, and would be fun to whip my freind with a oz

Hey man I was wondering how this post was going?
Personally im thinking about a tranny swap myself(among other things)
I have been going through many threads like this and have noticed that the common answer is to just trade in your car. However, personally i dont knw if the dealership has any stick lancers and I have some mods done. SO, how is it going? And what do u think this is going to run you? And if you got discounted what is rational price for others

what if it was a swap from a/t to m/t. would you only need the tranny and a new ecu only?

Be careful. From o/z auto to o.z. manual does need all the things you,ve mentioned but you need to consider the size of the auto tranny to the size of the maual tranny and how it fits in your car. I've heard of needs of new axles and such.. so its not to discourage you but dont think of this as a simple project. This is a response to last post.

Yeah cuz personally I'm thinking about this swap myself. But, if you can fin the time, money, and serious considerations I think this project would be great. It would also set a precedent for all those who want to as well. Hey man Go For it! Lets take our lancers to that next level .
