Car move when in gear, engine off

So... this is not Lancer related, but it's got to be tranny related or something

Honda, or Mitsu... I don't think it makes a difference here

My car moves even if the car is in gear, and the engine is off
That's right... if I park somewhere that's got a slight inclination and my ebrake fails... I'm screwed

Anyone has a clue?

I've never actually experimented with this stuff myself, but I'm pretty sure that's normal. You're supposed to park your car in gear because it'll roll LESS due to the resistance of the engine, not because it's impossible to roll it while it's in gear.

Yeah...it's not going to stay in place. If your e-brake (read: Parking brake) fails...yeah, you'll have trouble parking, but you should just have it checked and lubed every time you get an oil change done or perform one yourself.

It's only the engine compression that hold the car when you park with the tranny in gear... I dont remember exactly but I think you need to put the tranny in reverse when you park in uphill and 1st or 5th when you are in downhill. With this, your engine don't turn backward.

So I could indeed have a compression issue
Sounds like it's time for a compression test

Remember, the brake normally grab best when going forward... DUH! But people tend to park on an incline and wonder why their brakes (parking brakes/e-brake) doesn't work. I can park on a slight down-hill grade and put it in reverse/in gear for in out to roll. And that's w/o any brake. Exactly, what car are we speaking of...?

Again, NO. Your engine only RESISTS the movement of the car. If you're parked on a very slight upward incline, and you leave the car in first (to best resist rolling backwards), the car might not move because it's unable to overcome the resistance . If you park on a serious upward incline, your car will roll, so make sure you put on your e-brake. Oh, and turn your wheels so that should your e-brake fail, you'll roll a foot and then hit the curb instead of rolling straight down the hill.

Once again, your car will roll when your e-brake isn't on, and that's not a sign of a problem with your car.

Talking about a Honda Delsol

I'll keep that in mind then.

I was under the impression the car shouldn't move at all when in gear with engine off. Glad to know I'll go to bed smarter tonight
