Question Gearbox issues

Gearbox issues

Postby parralegend » Mon Feb 22, 2010 10:40 pm
Hello All.

Contrary to what your probably thinking( burnouts and a wasted clutch of which i never do ) i'm having perceived issues with my gearbox.

I've noticed over the last 2 weeks that changing to second and then to 3rd that the gears feel tougher to place into, even down shifting (rev matched of course) feels tougher than usual.

My question is does anyone have much experience with gearbox troubleshooting or some helpful hints. I'm thinking it's the oil however a few people have told me the oil should last time and then i hear as well that it depends on your driving and as i drive alot with alot of shifting involved the stock oil isn't suited to my needs.

The clutch feels fine it's just finding second then to 3rd gear it just feels tougher and feels more so like a friction thing rather than slipping.

I had a friend whose a learning mechanic have a go he thinks it's fine however i think his judgement might be clouded because he drives s*** boxes day in day out, it's just a personal thing that i'm noticing more frequently when changing gears

Let me know what you think fellas. I don't launch either

I would recommend an oil change. It's cheap, and if it fixes the problem you are all set. I have noticed that mine is getting tougher to get into gears and am planning an oil change once the weather warms up a bit. I have 49k miles on it right now. I have heard of others experiencing this and oil changes fixed it.

I have 23k miles and my gearbox feels the same. An oil change should show an improvement. In a more extreme case, worn synchronizers might cause difficulty in shifting but that's probably not the case.

Mitsubishi recommends:

DiaQueen NEW MULTI GEAR OIL
API classification GL-3
(equivalent to)
SAE 75W-80

2.5 dm3 (2.6 qt)

If you want to use something else then Amsoil might be able to suggest something.
