2004 Lancer OZ Rally with bad IPS bearing

Hello all!
Im a college student, so anywhere I can save money really helps out. I was qouted $2.5k to put in a rebuilt transmission. So im going to do it myself!
Ive done work on cars before, but nothing quite this extensive.

Im looking for advice, Im fairly positive the IPS bearing on my car has seen better days, as when i release the clutch in neutral, it makes some pretty bad noises (kinda like a grinding/marbles sound). It also does this iin 1st/2nd/3rd etc. It shifts fine, its just that noise.

Im going to be pulling the tranny this week, and replacing the clutch. It still grabs fine, it just has close to 90k miles on it. So I need advice on the cheapest clutch (Its just stock, no turbo or anything), that will just last a decent amount of time. I dont know if Exedy is a good brand?

Also, I cant seem to find the IPS bearing, does anyone have a link?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

exedy is OEM replacement they are a good choice! for the input shaft bearing go to www.mitsubishiparts.net to find it, or just go straight to the dealer to save on shipping.

you'll need inside/outside snap ring pliers, a bearing separator puller and press, if you dont have, or can't borrow a bearing press, you can tap the inner race on carefully with a drift punch and small hammer. The transmission is fairly simple to disassemble...

if it sounds like chewing marbles though, either the bearing is completely FUBAR or you have gears that are missing teeth, but i've only seen that on high torque output, like 350+ ft-lb

Good to know, I hope I can get those pliers locally, ill have to call around and see. I dont have access to a press, but im hoping to use a small hammer with a piece of wood? Not sure if thatll work.

Yeah im guessing the bearing is GONE.If it were missing teeth, wouldnt you feel a lurch as it passed by sections where the teeth were gone? Mine doesnt do that, but it doesn't sound pretty. It drives great though, I mean it shifts smooth, it got 347 miles to the last 10 gallons. So I hope things aren't to bad in there.

Today I got the car mostly torn down to the point where I can drop the trans. Tomorrow is the big day!

Hey everyone!
I just drained the fluid from my trans, and there were no metal shavings on the magnet, nor did i find any when I moved another magnet through the fluid.

Is this a good or bad sign? Everywhere ive been reading has been saying that a small amount of shavings is normal.

looks like mine, which was fine. have a shop press the bearing on/off for you after u have the shaft out easier and safe plus shouldn't cost u more then $20. Check my turbo thread for pix if need any help.

EDIT: Thanks ryan, i did exactly what you said. Franks auto charged me $10 to swap it out. Sorry i didnt replay sooner.

Hey guys! I just wanted to post a follow up of what happened inside of my transmission. I wanted to be sure everything was working correctly before I posted a "IT WORKS!" post. haha

It was, indeed, a bad input shaft bearing. I replaced it and put a new clutch kit in, and the car is working beautifully. Ive put about 800 miles on it now.

If anyone needs any help or tips on doing this let me know! I took a few pictures along the way too, if anyone needs them .

Once again, thanks for everyones help! Without this forum, probably wouldnt have been able to do it!

Cheers!

I would be inclined to say yes though... Although take that with a grain of salt because I am no expert.
