2002 OZ with Clutch Problem - 204k Miles Original Owner

Hey guys... I have a bit of a problem. We bought this car new in 2002, and haven't really had any problems with it, even at 204k miles. Original starter, alternator, everything.... Family commuting car. We love it, very reliable.

Today I was heading home and the clutch pedal got soft, then pretty much went to the floor. I had just enough pedal left to shift into 4th gear, and make it home.

I had been hearing a few scratching noises at idle the last week, and couldn't figure out their origins...

I check the brake/clutch fluid reservoir and it is near full. No leaks anywhere of any kind.

***I figure it's one of three things: Clutch Master, Clutch Slave (Release that is external), Clutch Slave (internal). How can I troubleshoot these individually?

Thanks!
James

Might be your TOB (throw out bearing) if its chattering at idle.

Hey guys.... I could use some help here... My car will be sitting today, broken, and I really need to get it fixed.

Does anyone have any troubleshooting advice as to how I can diagnose what parts is bad?

I have tons of tools and air tools, and can get whatever it is installed quickly, but I need help in figuring out what I should order. I don't have the financial resources to drop it off at a shop or dealer....

Help!?!

If your going to open it up you'll need to think about resurfacing your flywheel, getting a TOB, and getting a new clutch at minimum. There could be some other issues going on in there tho. Since your a 02-03 lancer I THINK the slave and TOB are one piece but not sure? You should download the FSM in the general lancer forum. Its a big help.

i have a 02 oz rally lancer and i just got done replacing the clutch and slave/TOB (all together in one peice). i bought an ACT clutch kit which did not come with a slave and i bought the slave from jcwhitney. it isn't an easy job taking every thing apart but all i used was a duralast autozone special socket set, two jacks, two jack stands, and a pry bar. the job takes about 2 hours getting it all apart and another 3 putting it all back together. takes longer aligning the tranny to the engine again rather than just pulling it off and dropping it. i recommend having one or two people helping you out cuz it aint easy.

after i got it all together again though i drove the car about a day and the new slave cylinder seems to have gone out again because it wont go into gear and there is some noises coming from the tranny. i think this is because the slave bearing wasn't strong enough to handle a performance clutch but idk im still tryin to figure it all out. ill be spending all day tomorrow taking it apart AGAIN and seeing whats going on in there

Its one of two things.

1. your slave cylinder is toast which is most likely, and yes your TOB and slave are a one piece unit internal which means pulling the tranny out.

2. Your master cylinder has gone out.

Either way I would first try to bleed the slave cylinder and check for any leaks. I you dont see any leaks up at the master then it should be safe to assume its your slave.

If its OEM quality then you should not have an issue. I have an Act stage 3 clutch for my car to handle all the extra torque from the turbo. I went expensive on the clutch and cheap ebay on the slave cylinder. It lasted 3 months before I was pulling the tranny back out and installed an oem slave which has been fine for several months now and no signs of failing.

Update: I pulled the tranny out the other day and the throwout bearing came out in pieces.

I ordered a clutch disc, pressure plate, throwout/slave, tie rod ends, and inner CV boots from OEMMitsubishiParts.com in Texas for a little over $500. The dealer wanted $1200 to do all this...

I am having the flywheel resurfaced locally for $55.

I will give you an update when I am done.

Thanks!
