02 lancer transmission.

Hello everyone i am new to this form, I just bought a 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer oz rally edition. I am wanting to fix the car up and see what type of fun I can have with it. The second gear synchronizer is kinda ****ty. I am looking for suggestions on either replacing the whole transmission or getting a rebuild. I have been looking in the Chicago area for transmissions and cant find anything. Any help would be appreciated.

I am not but I am fairly good with cars more than capable of doing a transmission swap but not a rebuild.

From my experience of searching and searching, pulling the trans out and putting it back in over 7 times, and spending plenty of money... I have learned that the best way to get a good tranny is to find a good used one. (My 3rd grinds)

The second option I can think of is if you find another "decent" transmission with say a bad 3rd or 4th you could put the two together and make one good transmission. This is the option I am most likely going to be going with.

Either way I would take the junkyard trans to a shop to be inspected by a transmission specialist. I had a local guy take my current transmission apart, clean it, and put it back together for around $200.

For the past two months I have been checking junkyard inventories almost daily waiting for a 5 speed lancer I can yank the trans from.

if you can afford the down time rebuilding is the best way to go...it's not hard, but you will need a larger probably 3" bearing separator and at least a 10-ton shop press...I recently bought a used transmission...all the gears in mine that were iffy were in great condition on the "new" tranny, but all the gears that were bad on it, were great in mine...I was going to disassemble all the shafts and build one good transmission, but it was my 3rd rebuild, and I just wanted the car back on the road...the only reason I bought it was for the bell housing...($450 plus tax ship and duty from Mitsubishi, or $650 for a whole transmission.) so I just transplanted my shafts and LSD onto the new bell housing, and threw my cover back on.

I had my five speed rebuilt at a local trans shop. The second gear synchro had gone out. It was about 1,200 total. The parts are what's expensive, nearly 700
