Dropping Tranny

So, I am in the process of removing my transmission. 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer Manual, FWD

I don't have the SST. What is an alternative I can use?

This is the SST I am referring to:

While I really don't want to spend any more $, I think I might need to breakdown and get one of these....

Of these 2, which is better?

The 1st one, doesn't look like it has adjustable sides, but it does have a 3rd support.....

the 2nd one, is just the 2 side supports.

I did find an 02 Automatic lancer video on youtube. Where this user uses one like the 2nd version, the 2 point one. Doesn't even look like he is one the actual strut towers, but more of the fender lip line

I used the top one, cheap to buy on amazon, plenty strong enough. The hook is adjustable up and down by turning the nut and it has enough range. The leg opposite the hook, with the rubber foot on it, rests on the frame cross-member beside the top of the radiator.

It supported the engine okay, and allowed the engine to be let down a bit as needed to help get the tranny out.

In addition to this forum, check out the 04-06 Ralliart section for advice and pics on tranny removal, is essentially same as yours.

So, I made my own support bar system

I also have a floor jack, lightly, underneath the oil pan. the oil pan is sitting on a folded up, heavy canvas tarp about 3" thick, backed by a wood plank, on the floor jack cradle.....

Now the fun begins...... this was all done in the course of less than 46 hours, and I didn't touch it yesterday... actually swapped out a kitchen faucet, and fixed the garbage disposal for my wife's aunt

got the tranny apart today..... everything in it looks good... nothing is blued or anything like that, there is 1 gear, that has some chipping of it's gears... it is the top most gear, on the input if that makes sense.....

as for Cranswick's video, everything went as planned... but, I couldn't get that snap ring to drop the bearing... so I started splitting case slowly... then the snap ring actually closed more than it was, and then was able to drop it once I spread it open....

Ok, so I talked to a machinist today, that said he didn't know squat about trannies, but that the metal wasn't blued.....

He turned my flywheel

while I was there, a friend of his came by the shop. old school gearhead, and he talked to me a bit in detail about my trans... he said I need to just get another trans.... he said it looks like the actual spots where the forks ride are not right, and there is some galling, super shiny parts... said I might have a bent rail, (or 3) and also the forks, are messed up, and also need a new 5th gear.....
he said just that little bit of rail/fork issue could have caused it to not shift properly, and be my issue.....

so, I want to find out if the 04 bellhousing is the same as the 03 housing.... below are pics of my 03 housing with the slave removed. I guess I am looking for the ball pivot mount hole... is it there?

At this point, I just want it to run, I don't particularly care if I run the 03, or 04 setup....

Also, talked to my machinist friend, and he said to just leave the rear seal alone if it isn't leaking (definitely does not appear to have any leaking going on)

just a bit of history on my machinist friend, he has been an automotive machinist since 1979, and he owns a race car of his own, it is his hobby, but he doesn't advertise with it, just races it... it is a 468 Chevy, running 110 octane gas, NA, and weighs 1800 lbs... his Dial in is 8.60 and he runs mid 150s. It is a Nostalgia series, 1932 Bantam bodied, funny car chassis. His shop actually rebuilds entire engines as well, as machine work

Post a pic of the 04 transmission. I deleted my pics when I did my clutch install on my phone.

So... I don't have the 04 tranny..... just my 03

talking to cranswick, he said my 03 DOES NOT have the spot for a pivot ball..... So I am essentially hosed on that one... unless someone sees it, and he missed it

So, I am going with a rebuilt 03, it is going to be $1030.75 with exchange..... UGH!!!!! $300 deposit is down, and their builder is building it.... should be done one Monday or Tuesday, and it is about an hour and a half away one way

My core, is pretty jacked internally, so at least I will be rid of it.....
