Question Slight Rattle at high Revs

I have a 2002 Lancer OZ w/ a 5spd which i bought new. As i approach red line, basically between 5,000-6,000 rpms i hear a somewhat faint rattle/shake that sounds like it is the body/chasis/plastic peices rattling from the high engine revs. Does anyone else have this problem? I can't tell if my engine or cylinders have some wear/damage or if this is just the result of the car being only $15,000 and usuing slightly cheaper build quality and parts that rattle under the heavy engine work.

The only slightly odd noise I hear in that RPM range is a distinctive whining but that's just the engine working its *** off. Make sure it's not something in your resting against a hard surface or anything in any of the compartments. If not that, make sure everything in the bay is tip top. If not that...well then...I'm stumped.

It could be one of your valves I know one rattles, but it is normal.

I notice a slight rattle but I'm not sure where it would be coming from though.

Do you mean a clacking sound around the tranny (lower right of the car)? Like something is rattling loose.

It could be the tranny, but a friend of mine has a 00 tauras that does the same thing too. Mine is recently doing that very loudly.

My only explaination could be the alternator belt pulley that needs to be tightened. Since I had my T-belt changed by the dealer, they might have TQ-ed to their specs to be loose. This is only guesswork since I cannot pinpoint the noise exactly.

Mitsu valves tick; if it rattles, the motor is in trouble for major repairs soon. Floating valves is a bad thing.

That'd be your engine working it's *** of kids. There's a definite tick if the engine is being loaded up like say on a hill, but other than that, it's quite all around. These motors are noisy period.

Well I believe mine ticks, but can you really tell the difference between a tick and a rattle?

Ticking comes from 2 sources: 1) the injectors when you open the hood . . . can't hear it inside the cabin. 2) the valves.

Sounds can vary a bit. It can sound like a tick from a stereotypical timebomb, like a late model escort, or a real annoying clock.

It usually happens at idle, never at driving speed.

As for the rattling noise, it sounds like a loose bolt floating freely and hitting something going in circle.

This usually happen going anywhere above 3K rpm. It gets louder at 5K rpm.

If so, it would sound like a tapping sound like drips from a faucet into a metal sink. Very rapid. It will happen at all speeds.

Gentleman,

My car didn't "click" before, so I never posted anything in here. However, something has changed and here is my .02.

The other day, I replaced my header and violently pulled the power steering back to get to one of the nuts. After reinstalling the belt assembly and tightened the pulley down, I noticed a slight ticking noise at idle. SO, I tightened the belt down and walla.. No noise. But now, I have the noise at higher revs. I will tighten it down more and repost the results.

For those of you that have already checked your belt assemblies, alternator, power steering, ac, etc...

I heard a slight clanking noise around 13,000 miles from my tranny. I took it to and they said it was normal.
