Unhappy cold weather = worse engine sound?

anyways, just woke up from an overnight shift i did...but wanted to post a msg and see if anyone has ever experienced or have heard your engine sound after 9 hours of being left in -30C weather?

anyways, here in toronto there was a big snowstorm that hit our city yesterday, plus the cold-cold weather and wind...and when i started my car in the morning...my car sounded like the the engine blew with a huge knocking sound, usually it's not that loud when it's cold and goes away after warming up.

after trying to rev the car to warm up..the sound stayed and once i started shifting i could hear something knocking in the tranny...really scared that this weather f**kd up my engine..anyways..when i started the car in my basement garage...it seemed fine. i guess my questions is...what could have made these sounds..i'm presuming the oil was thick and semi-frozen...but could this be trouble for my engine?

any feedback would be great..thanks!

I've had that happen a few times, best bet is to just let the car warm up, it shouldn't harm the engine at all.

Warm it up.

I live in Minnesota and it was -20 degrees farenheit the other weekend. I warmed my car up for 15 minutes and drove very slowly on the way home after the car sat in the cold for 8 and half hours. When it is very cold, my car misfires when i accelerate. I have the HKS BOV and I believe that's contributing to the problem. I also bring a spare key to let it warm up for a while. The colder it gets, the longer I warm it up. Good luck and let us know how it goes the rest opf this winter.

its been about 0 - 15 f the last 2 weeks here in nj. The car sounds a little funny at first but I just give it time to warm up every morning and then it sounds fine.

How many miles do you have on your lancer?

i just have 10000km on the car...it's been a crazy winter this year compared to last year...i wish i could just leave the car parked at home in my underground garage...but transit sucks specially late at night and in this cold weather. i'm planning on gettin a pager alarm, but i'm gonna leave out the remote starter...since it's a manual...i do know u can bypass this...but rather juss use the alarm part of it...but thats me =)

can;t you just leave it in neutral to use a remote start designed for a manual car?

Yeah we get long cold snaps here in Calgary, like 2 weeks ago it was -30 for a week, with the daytime high inly being -25 to -29, I think at one point we actually hit -40. You should be able to a remote starter for your car, just make sure to get it professionally installed.

i believe that if i was to have the remote starter with it...i'd have to override to have the clutch in...but i could be wrong...anyways not to go side-track...but i am looking into buying those 2 way pager alarm systems..but would like to know what's a decent brand and not too expensive...i was looking towards a compustar...anyone have this installed?

I don't think revving ur engine to warm up ur car faster in really cold weather is a good idea...

Yeah don't rev the car when its cold like that, the engine won't be lubricated yet so you might be putting some unneeded strain on it.

When it gets that cold here in michigan sometimes my engine sounds really bad too. I noticed a little solution to the problem. It works most of the time. Park the tail end of your car into the wind. When I parked my car hood-first into the wind, when I started my car it sounded like it had to break loose frozen engine parts to start and ticked really bad. When I parked tail-end-first into the wind, it helped significantly. I usually just let my car idle by itself and warm up for 10-15 mins and its fine and runs smooth. Don't rev the engine if at all necessary. The only time I see this necessary is if the car starts to stall-- but only rev no higher than 3k. That is one of the worst things for an engine. I wait for my temp needle to at least get 1/4 the way before I rev over 3000 rpms.
