IDK if this helps but I have the same thing happening to me on my 03. When I push it a bit and shift around 5K rpms and say a car pulls out in front of me so i push in the clutch and the rpms drop really slow instead of dropping right down. I thought it was normal.

It happens once and a while to my car too. Mainly after a long sustained RPM trip

The explanation with the Cat is correct, if you were to inject mass amounts of air into the cat after a long run it would burn up and cause it to not work as efficiently. Then the emissions would not be met for places like Cali and Van where they have air care.

You are somewhat right. On the right track at least. The engine drops rpms slow or leaves them hanging to lean out the fuel in order to clean out the cat of unburnt fuel and complete the conversion more efficiently.

Thus leaning out the engine with the throttle plate open a bit introduces more O2 and that helps clean out the cat actually.

Now that I have more kms on my car I either don't notice it as much or its not happening as much. But either way there's nothing we can do about it...emissions is the king nowadays.

I thought you meant that...seemed the exact opposite

Hopefully this post will finalize the high rpm issue.

its really weird for me when i upshift, feels like im burning the clutch but im not lets say i go from 1st gear to 2nd, i let go the gas, clutch in then rpm goes up by 500rpm then drops down then i shift to 2nd gear... is that normal? i know its not my gas pedal because i let go the gas completely when i press the clutch and it still does it...

and also when in first gear i barely press on the gas and rpm climbs all the way up to 3000 in less than a second.. i dunno if thats normal didnt have it with other cars i tried...

Look at your speed when this is happening. Your speed is directly proportional to your rpm in a standard, can't say exactly the same for the cvt. So with this in consideration, if your speed is always the same when your rpm shoots up that quick its normal. Nothing can be done for it.

And for the rpm to go up by about 500rpm when up shifting is somewhat normal...you just took the load off of the engine when you pushed that clutch in, and with no load there the rpm will go up. its up to the ecu to figure out that you let go of the gas and to act accordingly.

Has anyone with the rrm pulled experienced rpms staying too high for too long? Depending on your foot work, i would expect the rpms to plummet much faster since you have less inertia at work.

it could be the clutch engine speed increase. When you push the clutch in, normally the engine will start to slow down. They put an algorithm into the computer to keep the RPM's up when you shift so the tranny and engine speeds match up better.

it holds up for a second. How many K do you have on your lancer?

Mine was much worse around 5000km. I dont know if it does it anymore, I know I dont notice it

k, so i just took a drive out and did some mixed driving. Under normal driving I barely get more than 100 rpm higher after pushing the clutch. When i started to push it, i got maybe about 250 more rpm, even when i brought it up to about 6krpm. The only thing i really noticed was that when i was pushing it, it took like a fraction longer to drop the rpms. Here are my rpm to speed figures...should be the same for any manual

1st gear 4krpm ~15mph
2nd gear 4krpm ~27mph
3rd gear 4krpm ~38mph

Also, from 4krpm, it took my car about 2 seconds to drop 1000rpm and another second to drop to 2000 rpm. It also takes it about 2 seconds to go from 3krpm to 2krpm.

Hope this helps.

^^ yeah that should be the idle holder. The idea is if your pushing it, the revs will be higher at a shift point and will drop faster. The ecu compensates to hold it/increase it for a second.

After a few thousand more kilometers it should figure out how you drive
