Question Question on Passenger Airbag

I want to take out the passenger airbag out of my oz, but i have a couple of questions first.
1. What do I have to disconnect to make sure it does not go off while i am taking it out, I assume the battery but i want to know if anything else is needed?
2. If I take it out will any lights light up and if so is there a way to turn them off?
3. If anyone knows any easy ways to get it out please let me know.
4. If all questions are answered then does anyone want to buy an airbag?

I am going to be putting something else where the airbag is right now. I just need to know what i have to disconnect to make sure it will not pop out at me.

It's not legal. If you are caught with it removed, you are looking @ a HUGE fine... I mean a fine so big u'll crap ur pants. I know because I have a friend of mine who did that in his BMW to mount an LCD in the dash of his passenger side (where our OZ airbag is). I also heard that unplugging the battery won't disable the air-bag cuz it works off of it's own backup battery or something. So even tho ur battery is unplugged, I still recommend u take EXTREME precautions. Keep in mind, when an airbag inflates the impact is as if u hit a wall @ like 100 MPH (I heard that somewhere, I forget where though). Be really careful.

Airbags deploy with the same propellant used in the space shuttle's solid rocket boosters, just to give you an idea of what you are up against. If your face is right against it or within a foot of the bag when it discharges, you will probably die and then poop your pants. By law, any car with an SRS airbag has to keep that airbag (or both, or all if you have side curtains). If you are in an accident and they deploy, you have to get them replaced before it is 100% street legal again. I used to work Fire/Rescue and I have seen some wrecks with cars that were parked that the airbags still deployed in. There was also a wreck we got called to where a lady fell asleep at the wheel and I am guessing her head was resting on the steering wheel, right against the airbag. She veered into the other lane and hit a car head on. When we got there, it looked like someone had splattered cherry pie all over the celing of her minivan, but it wasn't cherry pie........It was just her brain matter (brain matter tastes nothing like cherry pie).

Be careful of what you are getting in to. All of the cars you see with the airbags removed and aftermarket steering wheels installed or with gauges/displays in the passenger seats are NOT street legal. They are strictly show cars, no matter if they are daily driven or not. Just like APC tail lights, the majority of them are not DOT approved. That is why APC got slapped with a $650,000 fine from NHTSA recently. They market their rice like it is street legal, when it really isn't. It might say in fine print that it is not DOT approved, but in the commercials, you see an APC tricked out car driving on the streets with no disclaimer or nothing. This was a huge mistake on the part of APC. Ok, I am going off-topic now, so I will stop.

the car is not going to be driven on the street anymore, i got a trailer to hook up to my pickup, so i am not too concerned about it being street legal. I just really would like to know if anyone knows what you will have to disconnect to make sure it does not deploy and any easy ways to get it out.

No Problem.
The truth is you can unplug it at any time, but I won't actually suggest that. Even though I have done it plenty of times.
Airbags use a solid called sodium azide that reacts to temperature, 300 degrees F. When the airbag sensors trip due to impact, 36volts is pushed through a heating wire in the airbag and when it gets to 300 degrees (very fast) the sodium azide reacts and releases the gas that inflates the bag.

The proper way is to disconnect the battery and leave the car for a good minute to allow the capacitors to dischage and then remove the bag. Many manifacturers use a grounding bar that shorts the connector when removed to prevent accidental inflation, but not all.

Always store the bag face up in a safe place. Unless you want to have some fun, the set it off outside. It's fun, and that is the proper way to dispose of it. I can tell you the proper way if do want to dispose of it.

It is actually difficult to ship as it is hazmat and requires all the paperwork to do it. Manufacterers have this all worked out but the privateer it is more difficult.

The light will definetly be on and you can't get rid of it.
Are you removing the driver's bag too?

You can get rid of the light. Remove the lamp just as you would with a Check Engine light when you remove your cat.....hehehe.........or not.

Sodium something-or-other.......yeah, that's the stuff they use. I heard it is the same stuff used in the space shuttle's SRB's. If so, that is pretty cool. You see all kinds of space spinoffs everyday -- like Velcro and ****.

Thanks everyone for your help. I am going to try it tomorrow and let you know how it works out. To answer you question timzcat, I am keeping the driver airbag for now, just for my own safety purposes.

It will still go off in an accident as a safety feature in the system.
You want to check that the passenger side has a grounding bar in the connector on the car side. On honda they have a little cap attached to the harness to plug in when you take the bag out.
Most all systems are the same and the passenger side should have some type of jumper to prevent ESD from getting in the harness. Ideally you don't want to have one and not the other but it still works and the light will always be on of course.

Remeber they are supplimental restraints and as long as you wear the seatbelt it is really not that necessary. But of course you always wear it now since the airbag with out a seatbelt will most likely snap your neck. The Evo belts have an active tensioner that in an accident will go off and will tension the belt to ensure you do not go forward.
